Preferred Name Option Enabled

If you have been longing to identify yourself in UW-Platteville electronic systems by a name other than your legal name, your wait is over.  Preferred name is now an option in Office 365, the online phonebook, Desire2Learn, and other select campus systems.  Full details of the Use of Preferred Name policy including the procedures for requesting preferred name and the list of systems where preferred name is available are posted in the ITS Knowledge Base.

This campus milestone is the result of collaboration between a broad spectrum of the campus individuals including staff from Human Resources, the Registrar’s Office, the Distance Learning Center, and the Patricia A. Doyle Center for Gender and Sexuality. The process involved compiling a list of potential systems and prioritizing them, then determining the feasibility of each system to accommodate preferred name.  In the end, 10 systems were identified as viable for preferred name.  ITS developers logged over 100 technical hours for the project in addition to committee meetings and time spent by the Registrar's Office, HR, and Web Development preparing procedures and the online phonebook. 

How do I request use of a preferred name?
Employees wishing to use preferred name should contact Human Resources.  Students may complete the Preferred Name Request Form and submit it to the Registrar’s Office.  Both of these offices are available to answer questions about the Use of Preferred Name policy and procedures.
