J-1 visiting professor appointments at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville must be in the Professor category. A J-1 professor is an individual primarily teaching, lecturing, observing, or consulting at the post-secondary level. A professor may also conduct research, unless disallowed by the sponsor.
A minimum stay of three weeks is required and the maximum stay is five years. The five-year period is a “continuous” period given to a participant on a “use or lose” basis.
To become a visiting professor at UW-Platteville in the J-1 visa category, a UW-Platteville department must first issue a letter of invitation to the candidate and fill out the appropriate paperwork with the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office. Please click through the links at the right for more details about the visiting professor application process.
The U.S. Department of State mandated that J-1 exchange visitors including students, professors, and student interns have "sufficient proficiency in the English language, as determined by an objective measurement of English language proficiency, successfully to participate in his or her program and to function on a day-to-day basis." [22 CFR 62.11(a)(2)] [22 CFR §62.10(a)(2)].
The eligibility requirements for a J-1 Professor can be found on the State.Gov website.
