ICET QuickGuide: Navigating the Discussion Forum Layout in Desire2Learn

Discussions forums are collaborative areas to post, read and reply to threads on different topics. Students can share thoughts about course materials, ask questions, share files, or work with peers on assignments and homework. Forums are used to organize discussion topics into categories. Course can have multiple forums and topics, but forums must be created before topics are created since all topics belong to forums. 

REQUIRED:

  • Instructor access to a Desire2Learn Course

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

  1. Log into Desire2Learn.
  2. Select a course.
  3. Click on More in the Navigation menu.
  4. Click Discussions.
  5. A Discussion Forum will have one or more Topics associated with the forum. Topics are shown below the forum in white boxes.

  1. To create new forums or topics, click New.
  2. To copy, reorder, or delete topics, click More Actions.
  3. Individual items can be filtered by Unread, Unapproved, and/or Shared.
  4. Forums or topics can be subscribed to in order to receive email notification of new posts by clicking Subscribe.
  5. Use the dropdown arrow to select Notification Frequency and open the Customize Notifications window.
  6. Click Subscribe.

  1. To edit or set a topic up for assessment, click the dropdown arrow next to the topic name.
  2. Click the pencil icon Pencil icon to edit the topic.
  3. Click the assessment icon Assessment iconto configure iscussion topics for assessment.

  1. Using the Discussions navigation bar, Subscriptions and Group Restrictions can be managed by clicking on the tabs.
  2. Discussion Statistics can be analyzed by clicking on the Statistics tab in the navigation bar.
