This two-story teashouse was built in 1688 by Matsui Naoyuki for his mother.
It is also known
as "Hama-no-Ochaya," as when it was built, the beach of Yatsushiro
Bay was along the edge of the garden. Now
however, the bay is miles away across reclaimed land filled with rice fields,
port facilities, and pachinko parlors.
In summer, beautiful flowers of yellow pond lily, lotus, and yatsushiro-sou
(Campanula glomerata) bloom for visitors to enjoy.
The Higo-hanashoubu (family of Iris ensata) are especially amazing in late May
to early June. In spring,
cherry blossoms, wisteria, kakitsubata (Iris laevigata), and azaleas are in
season.
In autumn, visitors can enjoy other flowers such as lycoris and bush clover.
The best tea from the area is available from the Hama Tea Shop, in the nearby
Honmachi Arcade.
