Kirishima National Park

A 15-kilometer-long trail linking Karakuni-dake with the summit of Takachiho-dake provides suberb scenery of nearby as well as distant volcanoes.  Fifty kilometers to the south is Sakurajima, Japan's most active volcano, which erupts an average of once per day.  The eruption can be felt well before your attention is drawn to the plume of smoke rising from the distant crater.

Around the national park are hot springs (onsen) and the Kirishima-jingu shrine, whose history dates back to the 6th Century.
