Yatsushiro, the location of the Summer Field Seminar,
is located about midway down the western coast of the Island of Kyushu
at the mouth of the Kuma River. It is an industrial port city
and an agricutural service center. Lumber from the United States,
Canada and Russia is processed here by the Nippon Seiji (Jujo) Paper
Manufacturing Company. Russian ships and sailors can often be
seen in the port area. Yamaha Motors, National Electronics,
Kojin Textiles and Sanraku Wines can also be found here. Traditional
crafts, such as Kodayaki pottery made by 3 families and katana
swords, made by Tsunetake Moritaka whose family arrived in 1390, are
also found.
