For more than a decade, the ornamental horticulture program within the University of Wisconsin-Platteville School of Agriculture has supported flower gardens at various locations on campus. These gardens have made a positive impact on campus life by providing an outdoor laboratory where students can apply concepts learned in the classroom. The gardens also serve the community by providing educational opportunities and a place of beauty for relaxation. The ornamental horticulture gardens have been a unique asset to students, faculty, members of the Platteville community, Southwest Wisconsin, and visitors to our area.
In the summer of 2002, construction of the new UW-Platteville Greenhouse was completed. This 6,500 sq. ft. facility utilizes state-of-the-art technology to house plants for the ornamental horticulture program, biology department, and the soil and crop science program. Students that utilize the greenhouse facilities go on to qualify for careers in landscape horticulture, turf grass management, nursery operations, bedding plant production, greenhouse management, retail floral shops, horticulture therapy, seed production, education research, and plant inspection. In addition to student use, this facility also hosts local and national gardening events and clubs like the Grant County Master Gardeners.
Surrounding the newly built greenhouse facility will be 35,000 square feet of ornamental horticulture gardens. Beautifully arranged as an outside laboratory, these gardens serve both an aesthetic and education mission for the campus and surrounding community to enjoy.
With your help we will be able to endow a fund dedicated to the development of the UW-Platteville Pioneer Gardens. As a way to recognize our special friends, we are proud to announce select naming opportunities in the gardens. Donors to these areas of the garden will have their names, or names of loved ones, permanently displayed in the garden.
Your gift to support the UWP Pioneer Gardens Project is an integral part of the UWP Foundation’s on-going fundraising efforts to benefit the UWP students and faculty. Thank you for considering a gift toward supporting ornamental horticulture and nature's beauty!
