Biographical Information:
Dr. Barry Ellis is Director of Bands and Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Dr. Ellis conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and is instructor of conducting, music education, and bassoon. He is also director of the Dubuque Youth Symphony Orchestra, the UW-Platteville Tri-State Honors Band Festival, and the UWP Pioneer Summer Music Camp, founder and director of the UWP Tri-State Honors Band Festival, and is the coordinator and director for The Band Conductor's Art Workshop. In addition, he is the founder and director of the Wisconsin College and University Faculty Woodwind Ensemble who performed in Milwaukee at the MENC National Biennial In-Service Conference in April.

Under his direction, The Symphonic Wind Ensemble has performed for the Wisconsin National Band Association Convention. In 2003, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble was guest conducted by Frederick Fennell and commissioned a new concerto for saxophone and winds by David Ott. It was premiered at the North American Saxophone Alliance Region V Confer-ence, hosted by UWP. The Symphonic Wind Ensemble has recorded for Daehn Publications.

Dr. Ellis was selected by the University of Wisconsin System as a Wisconsin Teaching Fellow in 1997. He has presented clinics for the Wisconsin Music Educators Association and has had articles published in the COLLEGE BAND DIRECTORS NATIONAL REPORT and in THE INSTRUMENTALIST magazine. He has presented clinics at the Wisconsin State Music Conference and has twice conducted the National Band Association Wisconsin Chapter College All-Star Band. Dr. Ellis is principal bassoonist with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and bassoonist/conductor for the Rountree Ensemble, a professional chamber ensemble. He has been the orchestra conductor for the UWP Heartland Festival for the past five years. He is active throughout the United States and Canada as an adjudicator and clinician. His present and past professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, Music Educators National Conference, Wisconsin Music Educators Association, the North American Saxophone Alliance, the International Double Reed Society, Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He is the Wisconsin state chair of the North Central Division of the College Band Directors National Association.

Dr. Ellis received degrees from Furman University, Virginia Commonwealth University and his Doctorate from the University of Illinois where he was the University Bands Conducting Intern. He has studied and participated in master classes in conducting with James Keene, Paul Vermel, Harry Begian, Eugene Corporan, and Craig Kirchhoff. He studied bassoon with Jonathan Friedman and Sanford Berry and saxophone with Keith Young and Joseph Lulloff. Dr. Ellis recently finished a sabbatical study researching the music of composer James Clifton Williams. A compact disc featuring Ellis conducting the music of Williams will be released in 2010 and available commercially on Mark Records.
