Wednesday, March 31, 1999 - 3:00 p.m. - Ottensman 149

1. Minutes of March 24, 1999 were approved as distributed.

2. Announcements

a. L. Riedle distributed alumni and employer survey results to

Council members. She has also distributed FE results for October 1998, April

1998 and November 1997 to respective department chairs/program coordinators.

This was a request from the last Executive Council meeting.

b. T. Salmon shared an article in the Dubuque Telegraph Herald

about Expo '99. She has also thanked the programs for excellent presentations

at the Women In Engineering Career Day.

c. J. Krogman summarized recommendations by Academic Directions

Committee to the Vice Chancellor. There were five recommendations.

d. Dean Shultz distributed a brochure from UW System Institute of

Global Studies.

e. Dean Shultz asked the Council members to encourage program

assistants to attend the Professional's Day Conference at Sinsinawa on

Wednesday, April 21.

3. Discussion Topics

a. Dean Shultz explained the details of the information provided

to members earlier about classroom utilization. He indicated that Ottensman

did well in class periods, but not in percent of utilization. He does not

expect any relief in room assignments, and stated that we have to do internal

allocations if necessary. The Dean also indi cated that, in the future,

PeopleSoft will have the capability to match room sizes with class sizes. He

also stated that classrooms in Ottensman appear to be not well utilized after

2:00 p.m. M. Anderson stated that we have laboratories in the afternoon. F.

Tufte indicated that some classes require certain types of rooms. The Dean

asked the programs to utilize Tuesdays and Thursdays, as more rooms are

available on those days than MWF.

b. R. Fujita needs (for UW System) two to three sentences on

Points of Pride for UWP. The Dean asked programs to give them to L. Riedle by

April 7.

c. The Dean asked for a volunteer to teach "Women In Science and

Engineering" course in the Spring 2000. He stated that S. Nicol used to teach

the course, but is unable to teach in the Spring 2000. J. Miller stated that

she may be interested in teaching the course. The Dea n also indicated that

another course, "Race and Science" is being developed, and the College will be

offering the course in the Spring 2000. He is interested in the names of

faculty to teach this course.

4. Other Business

a. T. Ceylan stated that the deadline for selecting fall semester

textbooks set by the Textbook Center is difficult to meet as teaching

assignments for some courses were not completed yet. The Dean indicated that

the early deadline was so that M. Larson could get discounts on textbooks at

the book fairs held in late April and early May.
