MINUTES - EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING
Wednesday, March 3, 1999 - 3:00 p.m. - Ottensman 149
Members Present: T. Cey

L. Riedle, R. Shultz, F. Tufte, and P. Young
- Minutes of February 17, 1999 were approved as distributed.
- Announcements
- J. Krogman announced that the date for the Scholarship Reception had been set for
Thursday, September 30.
- P. Young reported that three candidates would be interviewed for
the Engineering
Physics position. A schedule will be disseminated which will include a seminar for
EMS faculty to attend.
- F. Tufte indicated that two people had been hired, and that the department was close to
hiring a third person. He also reported that his department was ready for the NCATE
visit after spring break.
- The Dean reminded Council members that the deadline for Commencement speaker
nominations was March 10.
- Discu
ssion Topics
- L. Riedle reviewed the returns for the Alumni/Employer Surveys. For the Exit
Surveys, an example of the standard college page will be sent to all members. The new
co-op form was sent in January.
- The Dean indicated that the level of outside grant applications had decreased. He
asked that faculty be encouraged to start applying for grants such as ILI and Applied
Research. P. Young felt that internal grant applications had also decreased. T. Ceylan
sai
d that ILI had been changed to CCLI, and that the grant deadline was June 7.
- Each engineering department/program area gave an update on their ABET
preparations. Most of the programs are on schedule for the three-year laboratory plan,
curriculum and design, assessment and procedure areas. The Dean will distribute the
guidelines for the self-study at the beginning of the summer for the purpose of setting
up committees. He felt that as many people as possible should become involved to
est
ablish ownership.
- Other Business
- M. Muslu said that the reporting of D-F grades in Electrical Engineering would be left
up to the individual instructor. The Dean suggested that if e-mail is utilized that a
printed copy of the message be retained.
- The Dean updated the Council on advising folders. All of the program assistants have
agreed to record the grades each semester, and the Dean would like to express his
appreci
ation for their willingness to help. There is still some reluctance on changing
the location of the folders. The procedure for checking out folders for this current pre-registration will remain the same.
- P. Young indicated that his department was evaluating the use of calculators in
chemistry exams.
