Members Present: M. And erson, T. Ceylan, J. Clough, J. Krogman, J. Miller, M. Muslu, L. Riedle, R. Shultz, F. Tufte and P. Young

Visitor Present: T. Salmon

Minutes of November 13 and 20 were approved as distributed.

Announcements

P. Young reported that an extra section of Chemistry 145 has been scheduled, and the students on the waiting list will be contacted by e-mail.

Nominees are still needed from Chemistry/Engineering Physics, Civil/Environmental Engineering and General for the EMS Strategic Planning Committee.

The Dean reported on a Web-based learning system, "Web Course in a Box" which is used to enhance existing courses. Volunteers are needed to test courses. The guidelines and examples will be distributed to Council members.

The Provost has indicated that all offices are to have coverage during December 28, 29 and 30 either through an employee on duty or by forwarding calls.

Discussion Topics

The Environmental Chemistry course agenda item was tabled.

The Office of Public Relations has distributed new "Request for Faculty/Staff/Student Activity News Release" forms which should be completed for events both internally and off-campus. Noteworthy items should also be reported to the Dean's Office for use in preparing the annual report.

A discussion was held on ABET preparations. The proposed s chedule for ABET plans was distributed with the agenda. The schedule allows for a full semester of operation with an opportunity for modifications. The writing will begin next fall. The request for the visit will take place in January, 2000 with materials being sent in April or May. M. Anderson contacted a person at the University of Kentucky at Lexington who had gone through one of the 2000 inspections as a test case. He indicated that the ABET teams will hit the ground at full speed. Campuses should focus on two things in order to eliminate an additional visit in three years: (a) Have educational objectives published in the catalog. It is not acceptable to just summarize the ABET criteria. Goals and objectives should identify the uniqueness of programs. (b) Course objectives should be set and published in course syllabi, and student evaluations should include a question(s) about whether the course objectives were met. There should be an outcomes document for each class. Organizing the documents by objectives rather than by class should be considered. A question was raised on whether course objectives are needed for General Engineering since their courses are supporting degree courses. It was felt that this would be a good exercise and a good statement. A discussion was held dealing with the criteria for multi-disciplinary teams. The question was raised as to whether this can be met with combining students from areas such as mechanical and civil engineering, or should it be an ex perience where "outside" people are involved. The Dean felt that the College goals and objectives should also be included in the catalog.

Other Business

T. Salmon distributed data on placement and salaries of women engineers along with co-ops and internships. It was suggested that the data be presented in reverse order-most recent info rmation first.

L. Riedle questioned whether the questionnaires being sent to two-year and five-year alumni should include Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics graduates. A copy of the questionnaire will be distributed to those programs with a response due after the holidays.

The Executive Council will meet on the 11th, but not the 18th.
