MINUTES - EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING

- Minutes of January 20, 1998 were approved as distributed.
- Announcements
- J. Wilson distributed a list of companies seeking co-op and intern positions. There are
more jobs than student applications, and a reques
t was made to promote the program.
Co-op and intern students receive the highest salary offers upon graduation because of
this experience.
- R. Dymond is working on the EMS Home Page, and will be distributing the formats for
all departments to use. Council members were asked to give feedback on e-mail
queries for Mathematics and Chemistry and the content for the Prospective Student
Page.
- The Dean will distribute a draft concerning the use of inappropriate wallpapers and
screen save
rs. Once approved, this information will be read in each class and posted in
computer labs.
- The Dean reported on scholarship opportunities in Japan and China. An exchange
program for faculty is also being developed.
- Discussion Topics
- T. Salmon is seeking volunteers for the February 27 and 28 Admissions Office Junior
Visit Day. A presenter is needed for Friday for two 40 minute presentations on
engineering. Volunteers should c
ontact either Todd Landrum or Tammy. Tammy is
also seeking volunteers from each engineering program area to give a 15 minute
presentation for the March 27 Women in Engineering Career Day. A placement report
of women engineers from 1992 to the present is being prepared. Letters have been
mailed to prospective students for the Women in EMS Scholarship. A $3,000 grant
has been received from ASCE to help fund the summer institute.
- Information on the 1998 Grants for Excellence Program was disse
minated.
- The Dean distributed a list of recommended topics to be used in new faculty and
academic staff orientation programs.
- Drafts of the DIN and capital budget requests were distributed. The Dean will prepare
another draft of the DIN requests for the next meeting. J. Krogman moved approval of
the capital priority listing with a second by J. Wilson. Motion passed.
- J. Miller and P. Young reviewed the curriculum proposal for 145 Chemistry for
Engineers. A
suggestion was made to clarify the prerequisites for the course. Council
members were asked to share this document with faculty members. The document will
be placed on the February 10 agenda.
