- T. Ceylan assured the Council that temperatures would be back to normal by the end of
this week.
- J. Krogman reported that F. Masoom was hired as a continuing full-time teaching
academic staff member. The Dean indicated that there was only one viable candidate
for the ad
vertised position, so the search will be reopened for Fall 1998.
- The Mathematics Department's opening will be advertised starting January 16.
- J. Clough reported that the FIRST Team met last night, and four people were sent to the
New Hampshire Kick-off.
- J. Wilson reported that the Vice Chancellor's Search and Screen Committee had
narrowed the search from 49 to 20 candidates. References will now be contacted.
- D. Klaassen will be attending the February Facu
lty Collaboration Conference in
Bloomington, Mn. Any additional names should be submitted to the Dean by next
Tuesday.
- A discussion was held on the shortage of classrooms for the Fall 1998. With the
exception of Chemistry, all departments will be teaching some sections outside of
Ottensman. F. Tufte suggested that the Faculty Senate revisit the issue of allowing
Tuesday/Thursday classes to be taught for l ½ hour blocks to free up classroom space.
The Council agreed that this should be discu
ssed by the Faculty Senate.
- Randy Dymond has been selected as the College Webmaster to replace A. Thomas. An
additional student will be hired as support staff.
- Volunteers are being sought to attend the NSF-sponsored Introduction to Engineering
Course Workshops scheduled either on March 19-21 in Los Angeles or May 18-20 at
the University of Pittsburgh.
- Council members were alerted to the following deadlines for submission of proposals:
(1) Opp
ortunity Fund - February 1
- John Deere - February 15
- SAIF/CIF - January 23
- Discussion Topics
- J. Wilson disseminated materials relating to the new Women in EMS Scholarship. The
Women in EMS Scholarship Committee will be responsible for selecting the recipients.
There was some concern that the pool of candidates should not include those students
with a secondary education chemistry o
r mathematics major. The Council determined
that the pool should include teaching majors. J. Wilson suggested that the University's
scholarship application not include the word "xerox" copy.
- A clarification was requested for the purchase of books for faculty members from
departmental funds. The Dean felt that if departmental funds are used, then the books
are not the property of the faculty member, but should be made available for use by all
faculty members. Council members agreed with th
at interpretation.
- Council members were asked if there was a need to disseminate a report on faculty
salaries for use by department chairs and DRB's. It was felt that this information should
be disseminated to the Chairs.
- Additional information pertaining to composite student evaluation numbers will be
prepared by the Dean and disseminated to DRB Chairs and those faculty members
participating in the student evaluation process.
- An additional copy of the ABET schedule was d
isseminated as a reminder of upcoming
deadlines.
- Other Business
- M. Anderson expressed a concern over screen placement in Ottensman classrooms.
Some screens block concurrent usage of the chalk boards, and it was his suggestion that
the screens be moved off to the side. The Dean will investigate this issue, and place the
item on the agenda for the next college faculty meeting.
- Concerns were reported on the cleanliness of restroom
s, classrooms and labs in
Ottensman. The Dean will contact D. Langkamp regarding this issue.
- M. Muslu had requested e-mail capability for currently enrolled Electrical Engineering
majors, but was told by OIT that it was not possible. The Dean indicated that this
request could not be accomplished at this time through Compass, but would be available
through Peoplesoft in the future.
