- M. Muslu indicated that Stacey Hayden has received the Life Membership Award.
- Discuss
ion Topics
- The curriculum proposal submitted from the Department of Chemistry and Engineering
Physics was reviewed. The course, Chemistry 200 Undergraduate Research, will not count
toward the major, but will be used to obtain experience with research projects early in their
career. A motion was made to approve the proposal. After further discussion, it was
recommended that the department further discuss the question of having the course credits
count toward the major. A motion
was made, seconded and passed to table the proposal.
- Proposals for the $15,000 John Deere Grant should be of benefit to John Deere and help the
College. There are currently no specific guidelines for submission, but guidelines will be
developed this spring. Proposals should be submitted early in the spring semester.
- Budget areas were discussed. Capital requests of items $l,000 and over will be handled the
same as last year, with line items submitted to the Dean by the 20th
of January. The capital
requests should also include a three-year plan of capital purchases. The list can include
those items which may be purchased through DIN funds. There will be a 1.45 percent cut in
the supply budget. The Dean's Office will be responsible for the distribution of monies for
supplies and salary allocations. Lab Mod proposals are due February 28.
- The Dean indicated that the $100,000 Opportunity Fund from UW-P Foundation would be
distributed from proposals across t
he campus. The guidelines will be distributed to Council
members.
- Four case studies were sent to the Foundation Office for their use in soliciting funds. The
case studies included the following: Women in Engineering Mentoring Center,
Interdisciplinary Controls Lab, improvement of classrooms and a Virtual Laboratory.
- The Textbook Center is concerned about being audited and is troubled by the number of
faculty members who have not returned textbooks. These textbooks were purchased
with
student fees, and should not be used by faculty members. A list was distributed to the Dean,
and if not returned, the cost of the textbook(s) will be charged to the individual departments
involved. Desk copies should be ordered earlier to eliminate the need for using student
textbooks.
- Inappropriate computer activities have been reported. A memo will be created expressing
the fact that this type of activity is inappropriate, unprofessional and unacceptable. A draft
memo will be discus
sed by the Council. Signs will also be posted at the start of the spring
semester.
- Software Engineering is in the process of being sent through the APC. There will be few
additions to course work, with 60-70 anticipated majors initially. A motion was passed to
approve the proposal.
