New Business _____________________________________________________________________ COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS, AND SCIENCE MINUTES - EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING Tuesday, February 18, 1997 - 10:00 a.m. - Ottensman 149 Members Present: M. Anderson, T. Ceylan, J. Clough, F. Domann, D. Horn, P. Sharma (proxy for R. Shultz), C. Sundin, F. Tufte and J. Wilson 1. Minutes of February 11, 1997 were approved as distributed. 2. Announcements a. Position Open ings (l) C. Sundin reported that contracts had been extended to two people. (2) T. Ceylan indicated that the department had received l51 applications for two positions. (3) P. Sharma reported that 50 to 60 applications had been received in Electrical Engineering. b. Industrial Engineering currently has 107 majors, seven students over the goal of 100 majors by 1998. c. The Society of Physics Students has received the prestigious Marsh White Award. d. The Faculty Senate has approved the department name change of "Civil and Environmental Engineering." e. Budgets for supplies/expenses and student help will most likely remain the same or be somewhat less for the new fiscal year. f. Copies of the following materials will be disseminated to Executive Council members for department information: (1) 59th Annual ASEE North Midwest Section M eeting - University of Iowa - October 9-11, 1997 (2) UTIC Conference Development Grants of $500 are available to support the development and sponsorship of local, regional and system wide workshops and conferences focused on the improvement of teaching. (3) The University of Wisconsin System Women and Science Program invites participation in the June 9-13, 1997 Curriculum Reform Institute for UW System Science and Mathematics Faculty at t he University of Oshkosh. 3. Discussion Topics a. Display Cases - Currently the display cases in Ottensman are utilized by the departments for one month on a rotation basis. Industrial Engineering is currently displaying materials. The display cases will be shared with Engineering/Science Expo until April 5. J. Wilson will contact the co-chairs of Engineering/Science Expo to indicate that the display cases can be utilized, and for them to make arrangements with J. Clo ugh on the actual sharing of space. Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering will be looking at sharing space until the summer session. b. Phone Calls To Admitted Students - Materials were distributed to each program area for the purpose of faculty contacts with prospective students. It was felt that the initial phone calls by students resulted in positive responses. c. Current enrollment figures show UWP 3% behind compared to last year in new freshmen applic ations, but ahead in transfer student admissions. d. DIN budgets need to be submitted to the Dean no later than March 4.
