New Business _______________________________________ _______________________________ COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS, AND SCIENCE MINUTES - EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING Tuesday, February 11, 1997 - 10:00 a.m. - Ottensman 149 Members Present: M. Anderson, T. Ceylan, J. Clough, F. Domann, D. Horn, J. Krogman, R. Shultz, C. Sundin and F. Tufte 1. J. Krogman introduced Tammy Salmon, Director, Women in Engineering Program and Engineering Advising Office, to the group. She will begin her duties on March 3. 2. The minutes of February 4, 1997 were approved as distributed. 3. Announcements a. C. Sundin reported that Steven Steiner has accepted a position in Chemistry. b. The roof of Ottensman Hall will be replaced this summer. Jim Valaskey should be notified of any specific needs. c. Faculty participation in UW-P's Research Day on Thursday, April 10 should be reported to Dean Horn. 4. Discussion Topics a. The curriculum proposal from the Department of Mathem atics to change requirements for mathematics majors was added to the agenda. The proposed change would require either Math 403 or 413. Motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the document. b. J. Wilson distributed a rough draft of the EMS lead-in for the catalog. Any suggestions or changes should be submitted to Joanne by the end of this week. c. J. Krogman distributed a summary of General Engineering student status changes from September 1996 - Fe bruary 1997. The College is on track for the number of students. No core GPA changes were reported by the departments. d. Student evaluations of teaching were discussed. It was felt that the current EMS questionnaire would not be changed. The Dean reported that a Student Senate representative would be meeting with the Cabinet to discuss the possible implementation of a pilot project leading to student evaluations being published. e. The budget has been submi tted with an increase of ten percent in travel and supplies, and an increase of twelve percent for student help. Once the budget allocation has been sent to the Dean, the Executive Council will be involved in determining departmental allocations. f. J. Wilson prepared an Engineering DIN summary from 1991 to the present. Considerable discussion led to the fact that outside funding will become more critical. Top priority will be given to DIN proposals to be used as matchi ng funds. Departments should develop a philosophy/vision of where they want their labs to go for a coordinated submission of proposals. Requests should be submitted as a package with a maximum of one to two pages.
