COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS, AND SCIENCE EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING Friday, February 23, 1996 - 1:00 p.m. - Ottensman 149 _________________________________________________________________ AGENDA Not Available on the Web ________________________________________________________________ Minutes of the Executive Council Meeting Friday, February 23, 1996 1:00 p.m. Present: Al Richert, John Blomquist, Charles Sundin, John Krogman, Joanne Wilson, Daryl Logan, Rich Shultz, Dennis Horn, Max Anderson 1. Ap proval of Minutes The minutes of February 16 were approved as submitted. 2. Announcements Charles announced the Chuck Richards family has donated $20,000 for a chemistry scholarship. Dennis announced that Fred Tufte is the chair-elect of Mathematics and that Dick Strunk has announced his intention to retire at the end of the semester. Joanne announced that Koch Materials employees would like to make presentations to Civil Engineering classes re: their area of expertise. Dennis thanked the chairs for the information regarding post-tenure review and indicated that he would forward it to the URSTC. Volunteers for the master's degree in project management committee are J. Krogman, S. Yadav-Olney, and S. Balachandran. Dennis indicated that the academic deans had discussed the DARS system and that faculty and students will be encouraged to use it in the future. Dennis also reported that the foundation would like complete documentation about where to place the funds when a department receives a check and forwards it to the foundation. Dennis asked the chairs to review the foundation gifts they have received, compare them to the previous year, and submit a status report to him. 3. Summer instructional salaries Dennis read a letter from Bill Campbell expressing his concerns regarding last week's discussion of summer instructional salaries. He also read a note from Fred Domann indicating that he was comfortable with the situation but would poll the physics faculty. Al Richert had submitted a report that indicated the engineering summer salary figure would put 6 out of 7 mathematics faculty at a salary below their regular academic year salary for instruction. Dennis reported that the average salary of the college faculty is $51,000 per academic year. This would average out to $1250 per credit in the summer using a formula of 1/9 of 2/9 of the average academic salary. Discussion included the idea that the job description in the summer is different (i.e. no committee work, etc.), and an idea of summer sa lary based on annual salary but with a cap. Joanne commented that there has also been a lower limit on the number of students in the class, otherwise the class will be canceled. Reminder that all the courses must be taught within the $65,000 summer instructional budget. End discussion with the decision that there should be a single policy determined by the faculty regarding summer instruction. Joanne will announce the faculty meeting for Monday, March 4, 4:00 p.m. to the faculty. 4. Summer administrat ive pay The total pool for administrative salaries is $20,600. Dennis reported that he believes there should be a standard policy for administrative salaries. He also indicated his preference for the salaries to be based on annual salary. If all chairs and the assistant dean were to be paid one-half time, we would need $46,000. In addition, the program coordinators need to be considered. The DIN is one option for salaries - adding a line for salary to oversee the administration of various projects. Dennis asked the chairs to see him on an individual basis and we will discuss this again. 5. UTIC Spring Conference The UTIC summer conference is entitled "Teaching, Learning, and Technology for the 21st Century." Dennis indicated that the names of nominees for the conference should be submitted directly to Ralph Curtis. 6. Other Dennis indicated that John Deere would like to be certain that the investment they are making each year with their grants is well used by students. In the future, those re ceiving a grant will be required to submit a two page summary which includes status of expenditures and the types of class demonstrations and on-hands experience that the students are having. Dennis has just finished reviewing the exit questionnaires for graduating seniors and indicated that they offer some valuable information. As assessment is critical to the NCA and the improvement of our programs, each chair is asked to prepare a brief report based on review of the questionnaires. The report should o utline the weaknesses and strengths in the program and the chair's recommended changes. Respectfully submitted, D. Joanne Wilson
