New Business _________________________________________________________ __________ COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, MATHEMATICS, AND SCIENCE MINUTES - EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING Tuesday, December 3, 1996 - 11:00 a.m. - Ottensman 149 Members Present: M. Anderson, T. Ceylan, J. Clough, F. Domann, D. Horn, J. Krogman, R. Shultz, C. Sundin, F. Tufte and J. Wilson Dean Horn introduced Alex Hummel, a student visitor. 1. The minutes of November 26 were approved as distributed. 2. Announcements a. Tamer Ceylan's birthday was recogniz ed with a "beautiful" rendition of "Happy Birthday". b. F. Domann indicated that Dr. W. Doyle St. John was being interviewed for the EP position, and that twenty students had expressed an interest in the major. c. Dean Horn gave an update on the North Central team visit. There were questions about the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) not being required, the percent of students taking the exam, and the campus not using it as an assessment tool. The team al so wanted to look at faculty publications, especially for those faculty on release time. The faculty were encouraged to attend today's 3:00 Open Forum. 3. Discussion Topics a. The College of EMS will host an open house with the College of BILSA on February 6. Clyde Holverson will be contacting members concerning the details of the event. b. The Chancellor's request for each College to have its own alumni awards will be submitted to the EMS Awards Committee for action. c. The 1997-98 budget will need to be submitted through the BIS System by January 24, 1997. Budgets from the departments should include a realistic increase reflecting changes in priorities, inflation, etc. There will be a new line item entitled "Capital Supply" which should include items costing $l,000-$4,999. Items above this amount will be listed as a capital line entry. d. University enrollment figures as of November 27 were announced: New Freshmen Applications - 966 (Last year: 1,100) - 14% Drop New Freshmen Admits - 717 (Last year: 795) - 11% Drop Transfers - 36 (Last year: 55) Re-entrants - 3 (Last year: 6) e. The latest issue of Prism included a retraction of its publicized message that UWP no longer had an engineering program. f. A request has been made to submit UTIC grant proposals dealing with teaching, learning and technology. g. Discussion was held on student scheduling and closed classes. Summer schedules should be submitted as soon as possible so that a budget can be completed.
