Anderson, T. Ceylan, J. Clough, F. Domann, D. Horn, J. Krogman, R. Shultz, C. Sundin, F. Tufte and J. Wilson 1. Minutes of October 15, 199 6 were approved as distributed. 2. Announcements a. J. Wilson alerted the Council members to the length of time needed to gain CASS certification for bulk mailings. b. F. Domann indicated his willingness to conduct a colloquium for students interested in graduate school programs. He also requested the names and addresses of General Engineering students in order to invite them to an informational session on the new Engineering Physics major. The Dean suggested that other departments use this avenue to introduce students to their majors. It was felt that past attempts did not generate interest. c. J. Wilson was appointed to a System Task Force on Advising, and recently attended a meeting where campuses were asked what their best practices were, and what could be a ccomplished if additional resources were available. A compilation of the best advising practices will be prepared for December's Board of Regents meeting. Campuses will receive the outcome of these deliberations and be able to make recommendations. The College of EMS has already requested a half-time advising position, and will be able to demonstrate a commitment to student advisi ng. J. Wilson was also a key member of a committee which designed a new advising handbook for UWP. Copies of this handbook will be sent to faculty members. 3. Discussion Topics a. Library Displays - The Karrmann Library has changed its original request for display material. Each college will now have a designated time for displaying materials. The College of EMS has been scheduled for the months of February (Departments of Civil, Electrical, General, and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) and March (Departments of Chemistry and Physics and Mathematics). Department chairs will be responsible for coordinating the materials to be displayed. A reminder will be sent from the Dean's Office. Page 2 Minutes - Executive Council October 22, 1996 b. P hysics Course Changes - A review was given on the proposed course changes for Physics. The departmentfaculty will be reviewing the proposals at their next meeting, and the Executive Council will then be asked to approve the documents for final submission to the UUCC. c. Break Room - A request was made by J. Stephens to use one of the basement student lounges for a break room for faculty , staff and classified employees. It was felt that students made use of both study rooms, and that the location of the break room should be in a more centralized location. This item will be revisited at a later time. 5. New Business a. OIT - Kesheng Yu is available to help faculty prepare new course formats for a variety of presentations. It was felt that she should prepare a memorandum with detailed background information to be sent to the faculty so that they are aware of the services she can provide. J. Wilson thought that she should also conduct a workshop similar to the ones offered by the Karrmann Library in the EIC. b. Faculty Development Report - System has requested that more effort be placed on faculty development. The NCA team wil l also be asking about resources for faculty development. The Dean has been asked to supply l) the departmental and college policies related to the selection of faculty for development activities, and 2) an annual report summarizing faculty development activities. RST time would be the ideal opportunity for gathering this information. c. Discontinued text information should be sent to Mary Larson as soon as possible. d. J. Wilson requested that departments submit updated spring schedules so that loads and classrooms could be reviewed.
