College of EMS Advisory Board Meeting
October 9, 2009
Joe Coenen welcomed everyone to our meeting.
Rich Shultz spoke about general topics to be covered in today’s meeting and reviewed the agenda with board members. He then gave a College update.
Hal Evensen gave a brief update on Microsystems and Nanotechnology Engineering. (Handout in packet)
Lisa Riedle talked briefly about the Master of Science in Engineering Program which is now ten years old. The Program had its 100th graduate this past May. There are currently 320 students enrolled and it’s still growing. (Handout in packet) Lisa will be emailing each of the Advisory Board members asking the following questions:

Controls
Other?
Joe Coenen said the Nominating Committee is seeking suggestions for the Advisory Board Chair and Vice Chair positions. He asked that if anyone has suggestions for either position to contact Joe as soon as possible. The commitment for these positions is as follows:
Vice Chair serves for two years, then becomes Chair for two years, then serves on Nominating Committee for two years, and follows up with the Steering Committee for life or while serving on the Advisory Board.
Joe gave an update on the Advisory Board Meeting for the UW-Fox Valley Engineering Program which was held on Friday, October 2nd.
Joe said that mechanical and electrical engineering courses are currently being taught at UW-Fox Valley to nontraditional students in the late afternoons and early evenings. Discussions were conducted about adding more engineering programs at UW-Fox Valley. Rich said that any additions of new programs will be down the road because of funding issues. He also added that UW-Fox Valley has now had 40 graduates.
Engineers Without Borders students gave a presentation on the construction of the foot bridge in Ghana. There were 14 people (including three mentors) that went in August, and were there for 15 days.
Shane Drefcinski, Chair of the General Education Task Force Committee, spoke on the Opportunities in General Education Revamping. (Handout in packet) The draft is being shared with different departments for feedback, and the Committee is hoping to have a number of different models by spring 2010 with approval by fall 2010. Discussion along with questions followed.
After lunch, Breakout sessions were held by discipline areas to discuss interdisciplinary projects, General Education, and /or other discipline specific topics. Updates were given to the group.
The next meeting will be on March 26, 2010.
