We are offering a group advising and information session for all fine arts majors. During this session, the participants will be able to have their concerns about course requirements, licensure requirements, and program completion guidelines addressed by Lisa Emendorfer and Dr. Dan Fairchild. Fine Arts majors should plan to attend to have their questions addressed in a large group setting. The session will serve as reinforcement of their individual advising sessions and should allow students to plan their programs from their current progress to program completion.
To a large extent, how much students learn in your class is directly related to the quality and effectiveness of YOU the teacher. We will discuss some points that you will consider as you become a high quality and effective teacher.
A dedicated young teacher from the Milwaukee Public Schools (recent UW-Platteville graduate) will discuss what it is really like to be a classroom teacher, especially those situations that make those early years of teaching a real learning experience. He will also address what teaching in an urban setting entails as compared to the more rural environment. Discussion will cover classroom management issues, teaching staff relations, what's in "the contract", student discipline, etc. The session promises to give the participants a realistic view of what the real world of education is going to look and feel like and give the participants a chance to consider teaching in an urban environment.
This session is designed for students who are beginning the development of a résumé. Students will leave this session with a list of tips for writing a résumé and an outline of a résumé that they can add to over their years at UW-P.
Hear from a practicing school administrator concerning the interview setting. The presenter will conduct a mock interview at the beginning of this session and will then discuss the interview with the students attending this session. The administrator will also share tips and hints for a successful job search and interview.
A school administrator and current student teacher from the Aldine, Texas school district will present this session. They will discuss student teaching and teaching in their school district. They are representing a large, quality urban school district in Texas that has developed a cooperative agreement with UWPlatteville to accept student teachers. They have also indicated the need for teachers in their district and their interest in hiring UWP graduates to fill vacancies in Aldine.
A representative from the Study Abroad office on campus and a student who has studied abroad will be co-presenters for this session to enlighten students of the many opportunities that are available for students to study in many places across our globe. If study abroad has ever intrigued you, plan to attend this session to find out more information about how that dream may become a reality and a true learning experience.
Middle Level Professors will explain the requirements for the Early Adolescence (Ages 10-14) License. In addition, students who are working toward this licensure will discuss and answer questions on their experiences in the Early Adolescence Professional Development School at the Iowa-Grant Middle School. These students enroll in an 18-credit semester in which they spend 4 days from 8:00 a.m. until 3:20 p.m. engaged in coursework, skill development and teaching at the Iowa-Grant Middle School.
A first year teacher from Eastland Schools in Illinois and his father, an experienced teacher from Belmont Schools will (both UW-Platteville graduates) will discuss what it is really like to be a classroom teacher, including those situations that make that first year a real learning experience and those situations that never seem to change over the years. Discussion will cover classroom management issues, teacher/staff relations, what's in “the contract”, student discipline, etc. The session promises to give the participants a realistic view of what the real world of education is going to look and feel like early in your career and also a chance to look at the profession through the eyes of an experienced educator.
The presenters will cover graduate programs that are available at UW-Platteville within the School of Education. These programs can be valuable to you and contribute to your professional development. Many teachers and prospective teachers should evaluate the possibilities that are here to add to their credentials. This presentation will be very informative to those that are or may be considering postgraduate studies upon completion of their teacher education undergraduate program.
Our speaker was employed for several years in the medical field and decided that he wanted to become a teacher. He has not regretted the career change and is now a high school teacher in Burlington, Wisconsin. He will take you with him as he explores his continuing excitement about his professional career choice . . . . TEACHER.
This presenter will be a most interesting speaker who has gone from a struggling student with special needs to a successful college student. He completed his education in mechanical engineering and enjoyed a successful career as an engineer . . . . but often thought about teaching as his true passion. He is now a second year teacher at 36 years of age. He can express his passion for education and young people that he was unable to enjoy as an engineer. The passion for education and students, the night school, the three children, the income difference . . . . . All part of his quest to “succeed”.
The participants will have the unique opportunity to spend some time with a very energetic, humorous, and dedicated educator who has recently retired. He will present from the perspective of reviewing what makes a career in the field of education such a lifelong passion . . . . His look backward will help you look forward to a career that provides many pleasant and enjoyable experiences.
We are offering three special sessions that will be helpful for education students in putting together their education portfolios at all levels. UWP School of Education staff members will offer tips on how you can make these pieces of your portfolio, quality parts of the education portfolio. The tips will be practical and useful for all levels of portfolio development. These sessions are:
- Writing A Quality Autobiography and Philosophy Statement
This session will discuss how to write quality autobiographies and philosophy statements that will add to the quality of your education portfolio at all levels.
- Alignment of the artifact/experience.
This session will discuss how to properly align your experiences with the Wisconsin standards and UWP ksd statements and how to properly discuss these alignments.
- The reflection piece of the artifacts/experiences
Students often struggle with how they should write good reflective statements that support their experiences that they have included in their portfolios. This session will teach students how to write quality reflective statements.
