Pioneers in Distance Education for More Than 25 Years
Welcome
Discover the Difference Between a Good Program and a Great Program
Welcome to University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Online Degree Programs
Welcome to distance learning at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville! We are very proud of our pioneering history in this area. We will soon be celebrating our 30th anniversary of offering degrees at a distance and we look forward to leading the way in the field of online education in the future.
We currently offer online undergraduate degrees in business administration and criminal justice and graduate degrees in project management, criminal justice, and engineering. We adopted the online format in 1999 and since then we have served students in all 50 states and more than 40 countries. Graduates from our five degree programs have been very successful in enhancing their career opportunities and gaining admission to post-graduate schools.
Our use of interactive television technology (ITV) has spanned more than a decade, and we serve a variety of audiences with individual classes and an MSE program in adult education. We are currently in the planning stages for developing a state-of-the-art distance education classroom, which will open in 2008.
In addition to our accredited degrees, we offer specialized certificate programs and individual courses for professional development. We have also forged working partnerships with the Wisconsin Department of Justice and with Project Management Excellence to offer non-credit courses for criminal justice and project management professionals.
Distance education is very important to the UW-Platteville campus. Nearly one third of our faculty is involved in teaching and/or developing courses that are offered at a distance. Our focus on teaching is to connect with the individual learner to help them get the best education possible. Our students continually tell us how special they are made to feel as they pursue their education at a distance. We also have a distance learning center, which houses student support staff dedicated to providing services to our learners at a distance in a "one-stop shop" mechanism.
UW-Platteville has provided service to a wide variety of people through distance learning since 1978. The flexibility associated with our programs allows people who may not have been able to obtain a degree in a traditional setting, the opportunity to make their dream a reality. Although the main audience for our programs offered at a distance has been working adults, we also serve high school students, students from other colleges, military personnel, and place-bound individuals.
If you are looking for an accredited institution in which to begin or continue your education, I believe that UW-Platteville is a great choice for you. Please use our extensive http://www.uwplatt.edu/disted to obtain information about the degree programs, certificates, and individual courses that we offer. If you need further assistance or have questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Distance Learning Center. I hope you will join our growing population of distance learners!
Sincerely,
Dawn Drake, Executive Director

BECOMING A MATRICULATED
(DEGREE-SEEKING) STUDENT:
A matriculated student is an individual who intends to earn a degree from
the institution at which he or she is taking course work. A matriculated
student must apply and be accepted into the University of
Wisconsin-Platteville before he or she may register for courses.
Matriculated students are assigned to work with an academic advisor.
If you fit into the matriculated student classification, complete and submit the application form
electronically at http://www.apply.wisconsin.edu.

SPECIAL STUDENT
A special student is an individual who has not applied for and been admitted
to a degree program. Special students are individuals who are taking courses
for personal enhancement, are trying to earn a certificate or diploma rather
than a degree, are planning to transfer courses to another institution, or
want to start a course or two while waiting for the admission process to be
completed. Special students are not assigned to work with an academic
advisor; instead, they receive academic guidance from the UW-Platteville
Distance Learning Center staff.
Special students are allowed to enroll in a maximum of 12 credits before
they are required to apply for admission into a degree program. If
they wish to take more than 12 credits of course work as special students,
they must obtain a waiver from the Chair of the Department of Business and
Accounting.
Special students do not need to complete or send any documents other than
the Application for Undergraduate Admission before registering in any of the
university's distance learning courses. Special students are encouraged to
speak to a staff member in the UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center
before registering.
As a special student, you must understand that:
-
- The university does not evaluate your transcripts prior to your
enrollment.
- The university will not evaluate your work and life experience for
credit.
- You are not obligated to follow specific degree requirements. You
are, however, required to meet prerequisites for courses in which
you enroll.
- You are not eligible to apply for financial aid.
- You may enroll in a maximum of 12 credits total as a special
student.
- While you are a special student, you may apply to be degree-seeking
by following the admission instructions for matriculated students.
However, you would need to finish courses you are taking as a special
student before you can become a matriculated student.
The UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center staff recommend that you speak
to someone in the Center before you enroll as a special student to discuss
whether the special student option is right for you.
