Matriculated (Degree-Seeking Student) Registration

If you have been admitted to the criminal justice program and have received your enrollment packet in the mail, you should do the following to register for courses:

Wait for an advisor to contact you to discuss your credit requirements, answer any questions you have, and determine which courses you will be registering for during this time frame. You and your advisor can discuss your plans to take print-based or online courses.

To register for online courses:
You should go to the registration site and complete the registration form. You may pay online with your credit card, request to be billed, or use financial aid to pay for your online courses. The registration site is open approximately 2 months before the beginning of each semester.

To register for print-based courses:
Ask your advisor to prepare your registration form and send it to the Distance Learning Center for processing. A contract enrollment plan, which lists your courses, will be sent to you with your billing statement. Once you return your payment for the courses, you will receive the course manual and textbook order forms. You may begin working on your courses as soon as you receive your textbooks.

SPECIAL STUDENT

A special student is an individual who has not applied for and been admitted to a degree program. Special students are individuals who are taking courses for personal enhancement, are trying to earn a certificate or diploma rather than a degree, are planning to transfer courses to another institution, or want to start a course or two while waiting for the admission process to be completed. Special students are not assigned to work with an academic advisor; instead, they receive academic guidance from the UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center staff.

Special students are allowed to enroll in a maximum of 12 credits before they are required to apply for admission into a degree program. If they wish to take more than 12 credits of course work as special students, they must obtain a waiver from the coordinator of the Undergraduate Criminal Justice program.

Special students do not need to complete or send any documents other than the Application for Undergraduate Admission before registering in any of the university's distance learning courses. Special students are encouraged to speak to a staff member in the UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center before registering.

As a special student, you must understand that:

  1. The university does not evaluate your transcripts prior to your enrollment.
  2. The university will not evaluate your work and life experience for credit.
  3. You are not obligated to follow specific degree requirements. You are, however, required to meet prerequisites for courses in which you enroll.
  4. You are not eligible to apply for financial aid.
  5. You may enroll in a maximum of 12 credits total as a special student.
  6. You may change your student status to degree-seeking while you are a special student by following the admission instructions for matriculated students.

The UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center staff recommend that you speak to someone in the Center before you enroll as a special student to discuss whether the special student option is right for you.
