BECOMING A MATRICULATED (DEGREE-SEEKING) STUDENT:
A matriculated student is an individual who intends to earn a degree from the institution at which he or she is taking course work. A matriculated student must apply and be accepted into the University of Wisconsin-Platteville before he or she may register for courses. Matriculated students are assigned to work with an academic advisor.

If you would like to become a matriculated student, complete and submit the application form electronically at http://www.apply.wisconsin.edu.

If you are applying for the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration: In the campus specific section of the application, click on "INTENDED MAJOR OR FIELD OF STUDY" and go to the program section for BUSINESS. Be sure to click on the circle for BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (EDP). This will route your application to the Distance Learning Center for processing.

If you are applying for the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice: In the campus specific section of the application, click on "INTENDED MAJOR OR FIELD OF STUDY" and choose CRIMINAL JUSTICE ONLINE.

SPECIAL STUDENT
A special student is an individual who has not applied for and been admitted to a degree program. Special students are individuals who are taking courses for personal enhancement, are trying to earn a certificate or diploma rather than a degree, are planning to transfer courses to another institution, or want to start a course or two while waiting for the admission process to be completed. Special students are not assigned to work with an academic advisor; instead, they receive academic guidance from the UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center staff.

Special students are allowed to enroll in a maximum of 12 credits before they are required to apply for admission into a degree program.  If they wish to take more than 12 credits of course work as special students, they must obtain a waiver from the Chair of the Department of Business and Accounting.

Special students should follow the directions below before registering in any of the university's distance learning courses. Special students are encouraged to speak to a staff member in the UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center before registering.

As a special student, you must understand that:

  1. The university does not evaluate your transcripts prior to your enrollment.
  2. The university will not evaluate your work and life experience for credit.
  3. You are not obligated to follow specific degree requirements. You are, however, required to meet prerequisites for courses in which you enroll.
  4. You are not eligible to apply for financial aid.
  5. You may enroll in a maximum of 12 credits total as a special student.
  6. While you are a special student, you may apply to be degree-seeking by following the admission instructions for matriculated students. However, you would need to finish courses you are taking as a special student before you can become a matriculated student.

The UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center staff recommend that you speak to someone in the Center before you enroll as a special student to discuss whether the special student option is right for you.
