Master of Science in Engineering
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Do I need to make any visits to campus to complete my degree?
No, you can earn both the degree and diploma entirely online. We do, however, invite our students and graduates to visit campus. Graduating distance learning students may participate in on-campus commencement ceremonies.
Do I have to complete a thesis for this program?
No thesis is required for the Master of Science in Engineering (MSENGRR) degree.
Can I transfer courses into the program?
Yes. To have a course considered for transfer, please submit a course syllabus and transcript along with the Request for Transfer Credit Form.
What prerequisites need to be completed before being accepted into the MSENGR program?
We recommend that you complete Calculus II prior to enrolling in any upper-level mathematics courses within the MSENGR program. It may be beneficial to the student to have knowledge in a particular area prior to entering specific courses. This can be a previously-taken course, self-study or recommended reading materials from an instructor. Consult the course listing in the engineering degree area of the web site for other specific prerequisites.
What type of interaction will I have with faculty and students in my online courses?
Interaction between the faculty and other students is done in a variety of ways. You will correspond through discussion groups in the online course via e-mail and phone. E-mail is the most popular way of communicating.

Yes, UW-Platteville is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. In addition, at any given university, ABET will accredit either the undergraduate or graduate degree, but not both. UW-Platteville’s undergraduate engineering degree is accredited by ABET.
Do online instructors have the same credentials as campus instructors?
Yes. All instructors have at least a master's degree and many have a doctorate. Several of the engineering instructors also teach on the UW-Platteville campus.
What is the benefit of getting an MSENGR degree?
The MSENGR degree is comprised of a mixture of technical courses, management courses and technical elective courses. It is not tied to a specific discipline, i.e. mechanical engineering, but rather gives the student the opportunity to combine technical knowledge with management expertise.
How does the MSENGR degree compare to an MBA?
The MSENGR degree is a technical degree that furthers your knowledge in a particular emphasis area and enhances your skills in the management arena. An MBA is a general management degree that allows you to gain business skills to further your career, but doesn't enhance technical expertise.
How will this degree prepare me for future jobs or careers?
The MSENGR degree encourages flexibility by designing an individual program for specific career goals. You can choose the technical emphasis area, as well as some management course training, and combine these with electives that will allow each student professional growth opportunities. This degree gives the technically trained engineer management skills that will facilitate his or her career advancement.
