Acct 201 - Elementary Accounting I  (3 credits)
Course Description:  Acct 201, Elementary Accounting I, introduces you to the basic concepts and procedures used to accumulate financial information in following the accounting cycle. In this course you will study the information included on the three financial statements: the balance sheet, income statement, and cash-flow statement. You will develop the ability to use accounting information for decision making. 
Instructor Information: Steve Becker is a professor of accounting in the Business and Accounting Department at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master's degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Oregon. Steve has diverse business experience in public accounting, industry, and education. He is a certified public accountant and a consultant to clients in road construction, the community development block grant program, housing authorities with HUD and FMHA financing, other governmental units, not-for-profit organizations, and retail stores. Steve is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, several state CPA societies, and the American Accounting Association.

BsAd 120 - Introduction to American Business Enterprise (3 credits)
Course Description: BsAd 120, Introduction to American Business Enterprise, surveys the fundamentals of business including business formation and entrepreneurship, marketing, management, production, accounting, and finance, as well as the basic terms and concepts of economics.
Instructor Information: Susan Hansen has taught management courses at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville since 1991. Before that, she held the position of controller for companies in Kansas City. Susan also held management positions in the manufacturing sector for a number of years in central Kansas and Texas. 

Susan received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, and her Master of Business Administration from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Her areas of specialization are management, accounting, and finance. She is currently pursing a Doctorate degree in International Business.

BsAd 233 - Leadership and Management (3 credits)
Course Description: BsAd 233, Leadership and Management, will introduce you to modern management concepts and their historical development. The course will acquaint you with managerial planning, organizing, controlling, motivating, ethics, decision making, and communicating, as well as elements of group behavior and leadership. The course also investigates the nature, purpose, and function of management in organizations.
Instructor Information: Steve Kleisath has been a professor of business administration at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville since 1980.  Steve received his Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Penn State, his Master's degree in Industrial Psychology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and his Doctorate degree in Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University. Steve is a member of the Midwest Business Administration, the Academy of Management, and the Midwest Management Association.

BsAd 303/503 - Human Resource Management (3 credits)
Course Description: BsAd 303/503, Human Resource Management, introduces topics such as human resource planning, equal employment opportunity, selection, training and development, performance appraisal, compensation, safety and health, and employee and labor relations. The impact of law and of societal and business trends on human resource functions is also presented. Each manager's role in dealing with human resources is emphasized.  Prerequisite:  Grade of "C" or better in BsAd 233.

Note: This course is offered at an undergraduate (303) and graduate (503) level. If you register for this course, be sure that you choose the level appropriate for your intended degree.

Instructor Information: Marge Karsten is an associate professor in the Department of Business and Accounting at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and is currently serving as the department's interim chair. She has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville since 1981. Marge earned her Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Bachelor's degree from Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. Currently, she is a member of the Academy of Management and the Society for Human Resource Management.

BsAd 313 - Legal Environment of Business (3 credits)
Course Description: BsAd 313, Legal Environment of Business, is a study of the legal and ethical environment of business and its effects on business decisions. The course includes the substantive areas of contract law, tort, criminal law, government regulation, employment law, consumer protection, antitrust, environmental law and securities law. We will further examine the ethical implications of legal disputes in business.
Instructor Information: Scott White has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville since 1980.  He has also taught at Wayne State College in Nebraska.  He was chair of the UW-Platteville Department of Business from 1986 to 1994.  He teaches Business Law, Government Regulation of Business, and Employment Law.  His research interests are in employment law and government regulation of business.  He has written articles on labor law, discrimination in employment, and contract law.

Scott is a graduate of Creighton University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  He is admitted to the Nebraska and Wisconsin Bar Associations.  He is also a member of the American Bar Association.

BsAd 433 - Labor-Management Relations (3 credits)
Course Description: In BsAd 433, Labor-Management Relations, you will examine labor-management relations theory and applications. The course emphasizes labor organization, structure, management, and methods; collective bargaining, grievance arbitration, contract administration, and sources and areas of potential labor-management disputes and their resolution. Prerequisite:  Grade of "C" or better in BsAd 303 or Econ 343.
Instructor Information:  Machelle Schroeder has been an assistant professor of business administration at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville since 1990. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and her Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. She has completed the course work required for a Doctorate degree, and is currently working on her dissertation on the topic of cognitive learning strategies utilized by students in computer-mediated class environments. Machelle has a lifetime certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) through the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). 

Machelle's work experience includes eight years in quality assurance managerial positions for a medical device manufacturing division of Bristol-Myers Corporation and four years as human resource manager for public and private sector organizations.

BsAd 463/663 -  Marketing  Management (3 credits)
Course Description: In BsAd 463/663, Marketing Management, you will study the determination of market policy, marketing administration, and the application of principles pertaining to management of marketing resources.  Prerequisite:  Grade of "C" or better in BsAd 263 and one other marketing course.

Instructor Information: Louis Nzegwu is an assistant professor of business administration at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.  Before joining the UW-Platteville faculty in the fall of 1991, Louis was on the faculty of business administration at Alcorn State University, Lorman, Mississippi, for ten years. He received his Master of Business Administration from Morgan State University, Baltimore, Maryland; his Master of Education in Education Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, Mississippi; and Master of Science in Agricultural Economics from Alcorn State University.  Louis has done further studies at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas.  He is currently working on a Doctorate degree in Business Administration at Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In addition to teaching, he has been involved in a series of management development programs with market planning groups, especially in the area of international marketing. His membership in various professional organizations include The American Marketing Association, The Southern Marketing Association, The American Management Association, The Association of American Marketing Educators, American Institute for Decision Sciences, Nigeria Marketing Association, Mid-South Marketing Association, International Academy of Business Disciplines, Southeastern Case Research Association, and Mid-West Marketing Association.

CoSc 183 -  Microcomputer Applications (3 credits)
Course Description: CoSc 183, Microcomputer Applications, is a course recommended for all non-computer science majors who need to know how to use a microcomputer. The course emphasis is on using microcomputers with the most popular kinds of computer software used in business and education today, including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
Instructor Information: Donna Gavin is in her fourth year of teaching in the C.I.S. emphasis of 
Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Microcomputer Applications is one of the courses she teaches on a regular basis. Other courses include Intro to Programming in C++ and Programming in C++. Donna is a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers. Through the Continuing Education program, Donna has served the community by teaching several courses such as Computer Basics, Intro to Windows 95/NT, and a newly designed PC Hardware Course.

Econ 213 -  Principles of Microeconomics (3 credits)
Course Description: Econ 213, Principles of Macroeconomics, is an introduction to basic economic principles with applications to current problems. Demand, supply, and the role of prices in the U.S. economy are briefly surveyed followed by an in-depth study of the national (or macro) economy. Topics include unemployment, inflation, and economic growth; theories of economic recession and prosperity; the role of money and banking in the economy; government taxing and spending policies to stabilize the economy; and the United States as part of the international economy.
Instructor Information: John Adams joined the University of Wisconsin-Platteville Economics Department in 1970. In 1982, he became director of the UW-Platteville Extended Degree Program in Business Administration after working for three years part time as an academic advisor and course instructor. He relinquished the directorship in 1998 to take up the position of institutional researcher for UW-Platteville. He continues to advise and instruct for the Extended Degree Program. 

A native of New York state, John received his A.B. degree from Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Indiana University. Prior to joining the UW-Platteville faculty, he taught at Valparaiso University in Indiana and at Calvin College.
