Academic Advisor
Business Administration at Distance
UW-Platteville

I would like to express my appreciation to the students, faculty, and staff who have warmly welcomed me as UW-Platteville's new full-time academic advisor for business administration students at a distance.

I earned my bachelor and master degrees as a returning adult student.  Advising business students is familiar to me, based on four years of practice at a large research institution.  As with all higher education institutions, there are a myriad of details related to advising that are learned overtime with patience by both students and advisors.  The most important trigger to engage our mutual learning process is your assertiveness. My first priority on the job is responding to your requests for assistance, so don't hesitate to contact me.

WEB-BASED PROGRESS / ADVISING FORM
You can use a simple form on the distance learning web site to easily send me a progress report or ask advising questions.  To locate the form, go to the web site, select "Advising, "then select "Program-Specific Advising," and then "Go to Business." Complete and submit the form, which will be delivered to my email account. Please try it and let me know how you like it.

CONTACT BOARD FOR STUDENTS ON WEB SITE
Would you like to interact with other business students in the program? You have more than 400 fellow students, mostly located in Wisconsin.  Watch the distance learning web site (in the Program-Specific Advising for Business) for a form to submit for the Distance Learning Center.  After you submit your information on the designated form, a posting will be placed on the web site with information on how other students may contact you. All postings will be managed through the Distance Learning Center staff. You may find other students who are are interested in human resources, are pursuing the accounting minor, live close enough to meet for coffee, and seek support or hints for success.

CAREER RESOURCES
WISCareers. Go to http://wiscareers.education.wisc.edu.This terrific intranet site has assessments you take online, help for jobseekers (including a resume writer), and a lot of information on occupations, educational programs, and employers (especially in Wisconsin).  Anyone can take the guest tour, but as a distance learning student in business, you can have your own locker that saves information for return visits to the site.  You should contact me for the UW-Platteville registration code.  The registration code is used only once, with a username and password of your choice, which are used for subsequent access to the site. If you need assistance, contact me at zugenbup@uwplatt.eduor 1-800-362-5460.

Careers--ValidateYour Major.  Go to http://www.uwhelp.wisconsin.edu. Select from the main menu, "Careers--Validate Your Major."  Within a few minutes, you can complete a skill interest inventory that shows how your answers match with a variety of business occupations.  Additional links reveal more information on specific occupations.  It's a fun career-planning tool at your fingertips.

RESOURCES FOR LEARNERS
A good way to succeed as a student is to examine the techniques you employ during the learning process.  Some study techniques are more efficient and produce better results.  It is an excellent investment of your time and energy to try different methods and approaches to learning. I suggest experimenting with different tips and techniques until you find the combination that work best for you.  I am developing a "Resources for Learners" category for the distance learning web site, under "Program-Specific Advising" (http://www.uwplatt.edu/disted/advising/Business.HTM).  You can watch that location in the future.  Until that is available, here are some resources for "what-I-need-to-know-about-studying-but-nobody-told-me." If you discover learning resources you'd like to share with other students, please email them to me.

Book Resource:
Siebert& Gilpin. Time For College: When you work, have a family, and want more from life, Practical Psychology Press, 1989.  This little handbook has many hints and tips for academic success that pertain to adult learners.  Check out bookstores or libraries for this resource.

Study Guides for Textbooks
Textbook publishers sometimes produce study guides that accompany a specific textbook. These materials might not be listed on your textbook order forms (because the order forms usually list only the REQUIRED texts that you must purchase to complete the course).   If you seek supplemental material and are willing to purchase it, check with the textbook publisher or a book seller to find out if additional materials are available.  It could be a useful investment for courses you find challenging.

SUGGESTIONS AND FEEDBACK
Please share your ideas or helpful tips for other students by sending them tome.   Let me know whether the new resources are helpful. In the future, watch for more information to be posted on the business advising section of the DLC web site.  We've only just begun.
