A year ago, Donna Perkins, director of the graduate project management program, began the task of applying to the Project Management Institute (PMI) to become a Global Registered Education Provider for PMI.  Her diligence in pursuing this process paid off earlier this year, when Perkins was informed that the Master of Science in Project Management curriculum had been reviewed and accepted by PMI and UW-Platteville is now listed as a Global Registered Education Provider with PMI.

The Project Management Institute was established in 1969 and today boasts a membership of more than 80,000members in 125 countries.  PMI has become, and continues to be, the leading professional association in project management. Today, PMI provides global leadership in the development of standards for the project management profession. This is accomplished, in part, through publications, research, education/training, professional development, and certification programs. In 1999, PMI became the first organization to have its certification program attain the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 recognition.

The PMI Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.) Program enhances the ongoing professional development of project managers by identifying providers of appropriate project management learning activities and products.  Organizations can be recognized as a Basic, Global, or Corporate/Government Registered Education Provider and must adhere to the R.E.P. criteria.  Because UW-Platteville's project management program is available completely online, we can serve people throughout the world, thus making us eligible to be recognized in the Global category.

The benefits of being accepted as a Global Registered Education Provider are many.  Since being added to this list, Donna Perkins has been contacted by several companies that are interested in pursuing educational opportunities with UW-Platteville in the area of project management.  In addition, other universities that offer some project management courses are interested in partnering with UW-Platteville to make our degree program available to their students. Another benefit is being able to tell potential students (and their employers) about how our curriculum fits into the PMI guidelines. Because this organization has a positive impression in the business community, it helps lend additional credibility to our project management program.

UW-Platteville is now listed on the PMI website and will be an exhibitor at the PMI annual symposium in Nashville, Tennessee, in early November. Watch for future articles about the annual symposium, which Donna Perkins and Dawn Drake will be attending.
