Sheila Cheek died peacefully at home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 10, 2003. For almost 20 years, Sheila was employed as an administrative assistant for the UW-Platteville Extended Degree Program in Business Administration (which later became the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program at a distance).

She was a key person in developing an administrative records system for the program and organizing the office structure. She was an advocate for distance learners, always ready to answer their questions or do what she could to help them achieve the goal of earning a degree.

Sheila possessed a special gift of being able to make people believe in themselves. With her gift, she encouraged students, faculty, and staff alike to succeed. To the Extended Degree staff, Sheila was a role model both professionally and personally. Her sense of humor and wit were appreciated by anyone with whom she communicated.

On behalf of the Distance Learning Center staff and faculty, we extend our condolences and appreciation to Sheila's husband, Frank, and their three children--Suzy, Cathy, and Mike--and their families, and her mother Ruth.
