During the first week of
November, Donna Perkins and I attended the Project Management Institute (PMI) National Symposium in Nashville,
Tennessee, to display information about UW-Platteville's online Project
Management program. The trip was a great success, with the exception
of the encounter between our van and a deer just a few miles from the conference
site--but that's another story!
We were very pleased with
the international exposure that this symposium gave UW-Platteville's program.
We had the opportunity to speak individually to more than 300 potential
students about our program, and we distributed information to more than
3,000 symposium participants. It was extremely exciting to talk to
such a wide variety of people who were interested in learning about our
Project Management program.
UW-Platteville is one of
a handful of institutions that offer the entire project management curriculum
completely online, which was a real selling point to the symposium participants.
Since the symposium was held, we've had several people whom we met there
enroll in courses and/or go through the admission process for the Project
Management program.
At the symposium, we spoke
to representatives from other institutions that offer project management
programs, allowing us to compare and contrast our degree with others in
the United States and to begin talking about forming some partnerships.
Each program has a unique niche that differentiates us from one another,
and we found it very helpful to share our successes and difficulties. We
also were able to make valuable connections with a number of vendors in
the project management arena, which helps us stay current in the industry.
We also recruited
instructors to teach in our Project Management program while we were at
the symposium. Because instructors do not need to be on campus to
teach our online courses, we can choose from many qualified individuals
to add to our base of faculty. We were very pleased to see the number
of highly qualified individuals who are interested in teaching in our program.
In fact, we have our first instructor from New York (whom we met at the
symposium) teaching a project management course this semester!
We had a great time visiting
with alumni from UW-Platteville at the symposium! There were many
people who stopped by our exhibit booth to say hello and send their greetings
back to the Platteville campus. We found it very satisfying to listen
to the great things that these alums are doing with their careers.
To our current students and future alumni in project management:
You will have a connection with UW-Platteville no matter where you live
and work!
Overall, we found the symposium
to be a great way to connect with a wide variety of people who can have
a positive impact on our Project Management program. We are already making plans to
attend the next symposium. We hope to see many of you in San Antonio,
Texas, in October 2002!
