As the second year of the Student Advisory Board draws to a close, I would like to provide a brief summary of some of the activities that the group has been involved with in representing YOUR student voice. As you will note in reading this article, the variety of activities in which the group participates is quite extensive. The student perspective that is brought to UW-Platteville distance education from this group helps us as we strive to continue to meet and exceed expectations of our students.

One of the major purposes of the Student Advisory Board is to give feedback on new and existing policies, procedures, projects, and processes. In the past year, this group has been involved in providing feedback in the following areas:

Web site design and content
New marketing materials
Marketing initiatives
Alumni events
Registration system
Evaluation forms
Virtual orientation activities
Virtual open house content
Virtual graduation event
Electronic evaluation system
Web conferencing system
25th anniversary activities

In addition, the group has introduced new concepts for consideration by UW-Platteville. Although all of the items have not been fully implemented, a decision will be made in the upcoming month as to which initiatives will continue. Some of these initiatives include:

Development and management of a discussion board for project management
Recommendations for improving readiness of online courses
Developing experiential credit opportunities for graduate programs
Research regarding offering online Ph.D. programs
Uses of student identification cards for students at a distance

As we prepare to begin the third year of operation of the Student Advisory Board, we are in need of members from each program to join the board. As our members roll off the board when they graduate, it is important that we have dedicated individuals to replace them and continue to bring the "voice of the student" into our daily operations. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a student advisory board member, please contact Dawn Drake or contact one of the current members of the board. Their contact information can be found on the distance education web site under the heading of "Student Center." Board terms are 1 year in length and begin in January. We meet monthly, via telephone or web conferencing. I sincerely hope that you will consider joining the Board.

I would personally like to thank all of the current members of the Student Advisory Board for their ideas, honesty, and enthusiasm as we move distance education at UW-Platteville to the next level. Without your perspective, we would not be able to move forward on so many different initiatives!
