DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Note: This curriculum applies only to students who were admitted to the Master of Science in Project Management program before 2008. Please use the revised curriculum if you were admitted Fall 2007 or later.

The curriculum has been designed to follow the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), which forms the foundation needed to obtain the Project Management Professional (PMP) designation.

The MSPM program consists of 30-36 credit hours involving (0 to 12) credits of business foundation courses:

ACCT 7000 Managerial Accounting: The interpretation and analysis of accounting information for internal and external decisions. Basic accounting concepts used in financial reporting, project costing, process costing, budgeting, cost-volume-profit analysis, and internal control systems.
3 credits

BSAD 5530 Organizational Behavior: In-depth study of the development of organizational theory and behavior. Recent theory is discussed in relationship to management applications.
3 credits

BSAD 5620 Financial Management: An introduction to the finance function and financial management of the firm, including techniques of financial analysis, working capital management, capital budgeting, the acquisition and management of corporate capital, and dividend policy. Analysis of how the financial manager influences the decision-making process within the firm.
Prerequisite for BSAD 5620: An accounting course.

BSAD 6630 Marketing Management: The determination of market policy; marketing administration and application of principles pertaining to management of marketing resources.

Fifteen (15) credits of project management core courses:

BSAD 7540 Advanced Quality Management: Achieving quality through continuous improvement of processes, customer satisfaction, and creating a team environment. Emphasis on major tenets of the field, systems thinking, hoshin planning, and data collection and analysis.
3 credits

COMM 7330 Organizational Communication: Horizontal and vertical communication channels in education, industry, business, and society as well as leadership, persuasion, rumor theory, and communication networks are examined in class and on location when possible.
3 credits

PM 7010 Project Management Techniques I: Issues surrounding project scope definition; plan development and execution; sequencing, scheduling, and controlling activities for timely completion of projects; and collection and dissemination of project-related information.
3 credits

PM 7020 Project Management Techniques II: A sequence of project management topics regarding organizational planning, staff acquisition, and team development; quality planning, assurance and control; risk identification and control; and managing procurement of goods and services from outside the performing organization.
3 credits

PM 7840 Project Management Capstone Course: This course draws on the business foundation and project management concepts, theories and techniques, specifically emphasizing the role of the project manager in implementing and accomplishing project plans and objectives. Students may draw on topics from their workplace or may choose from projects provided by companies in our local area requesting consulting services in developing feasibility studies and project proposals. Note that the ability to assign such a "real world" project depends on the availability of companies interested in such analyses at the time.
