  1. Do I need to make any visits to campus to complete my degree?
    You do not need to visit campus to complete your degree; however, you are always welcome to visit campus and your instructors.

  2. Do I have to complete a thesis for this program?
    No thesis is required for the Master of Science in Engineering degree.

  3. Can I transfer courses into the program?
    Yes. To have a course considered for transfer, please submit a course syllabus and transcript along with the Request for Transfer Credit Form.

  4. What prerequisites need to be completed before being accepted into the Master of Science in Engineering program?
    We recommend that you complete Calculus II prior to enrolling in any upper-level mathematics courses within the Master of Science in Engineering program. It may be beneficial to the student to have previous knowledge in a particular area prior to entering specific courses. This can be a previously taken course, self-study or recommended reading materials from an instructor. Consult the course listings in the engineering degree area of the web site for other specific prerequisites.

  5. What type of interaction will I have with faculty and students in my online courses?
    Interaction between the faculty and other students is done in a variety of ways. You will correspond through the course, by email, and by phone. Email is the most popular way of communicating.

  6. Is the Master of Science in Engineering program accredited by ABET?
    ABET accredits undergraduate engineering degrees. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville's graduate degree programs are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. UWP is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

  7. Do online instructors have the same credentials as campus instructors?
    Yes. All graduate instructors have at least a master's degree. Many have a PH.D. Many of the engineering instructors also teach on the UWP campus.

  8. What is the benefit of getting a Master of Science in Engineering degree?
    The Master of Science in Engineering degree is designed as an interdisciplinary degree. It is comprised of a mixture of technical courses, management courses and technical elective courses. It is not tied to a specific discipline, i.e. Mechanical Engineering, but rather gives the student the opportunity to combine technical knowledge with management expertise.

  9. How does the Master of Science in Engineering degree compare to an MBA?
    The Master of Science in Engineering is a technical degree that furthers your knowledge in a particular emphasis area and enhances your skills in the business arena. An MBA is a degree that allows you to gain business-operating skills to further your career, but doesn't enhance technical expertise.

  10. How will this degree prepare me for future jobs or careers?
    The Master of Science in Engineering degree encourages flexibility by designing an individual program for specific career goals. The student chooses the technical emphasis area, as well as some management course training, and combines these with electives that will allow each student professional growth opportunities. This degree gives the technically trained engineer professional management skills that will facilitate career advancement.
