Leadership in Police Organizations

Wisconsin Department of Justice LogoThe Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), Training and Standards Bureau, and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (UWP) have forged a partnership to offer online educational opportunities to criminal justice professionals for career development.

These classes can count towards criminal justice electives for the undergraduate criminal justice degree at UW-Platteville.

Jerry Schuetz

"I have been a student in the first-line supervisor course, and am completing the second portion of the two-semester Leadership in Police Organizations course. I've found these experiences to be incredibly valuable to administrators, as we learn best practices to leadership issues in police organizations throughout the state, without having to travel anywhere to learn them. Most of the problems in a law enforcement agency aren't "new", they are just issues we haven't faced yet. When we network with other professionals in a learning environment like this, we are able to both learn and get some great ideas about how to face these challenges."

-Jerry Shuetz, 2006 Graduate

Course Development

Dr. Howard T. Prince II, John F. Halstead (LTC, USA, Retired), and Larry M. Hesser (Former Chief of Police in Georgetown, Texas), working under the auspices of The International Association of Chiefs of Police, have adapted this course for use by leaders in police organizations. The course was originally developed for a required course at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, under the leadership of Brigadier General (Retired) Howard T. Prince II when he served as the Professor and Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership.

The course material has been tested and taught for many years at West Point. It represents the best thinking of experienced military leaders who, through their work experiences and academic studies, have discovered how to apply scientific knowledge of human behavior to leadership situations in complex organizations.
