GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Requirements effective through August 31, 2005.

Not all courses are available from UW-Platteville at a distance. Those not available from UW-Platteville are generally available through other distance learning programs. Your academic advisor will help you find a program that offers the courses you need. Many general education courses are offered from the UW Colleges and UW Independent Learning.

Competency Requirements (11 credits total)

1. Communication

English Composition (not available at a distance from UW-Platteville) 6 credits

ENGL 1130, Freshman Composition (3 cr.)
ENGL 1230, Freshman Composition (3 cr.)

Speech Communication (available at a distance from UW-Platteville) 2 credits

SPCH 1010, Public Speaking (2 cr.)

2. Mathematics - 3 credits

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree must take at least one math course at or above MATH 1630.

MATH 1730, Mathematics of Finance (3 cr.) is available at a distance from UW-Platteville and fulfills the math requirement.

Liberal Arts Requirements (36 credits total)

1. HUMANITIES, FINE ARTS, and HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE - 12 credits
You must take at least three credits in each of the three areas listed below. The remaining three credits must be a second course from one of the disciplines chosen for the first course in Fine Arts or Humanities or any course in Historical Perspective.

  1. Fine Arts (Art, Music, or Theater) - 3 cr.
    Music 1590, Music Appreciation (3 cr.), is available at a distance from UW-Platteville and partially fulfills the humanities and fine arts requirement.
  2. Humanities (Literature, Foreign Language, Philosophy, or Women's Studies) - 3 cr.
  3. Historical Perspective (History) - 3 cr.
  4. Your 4th course must be from the same academic discipline as one of the three previous courses you take, depending on your course selection. For example, if you took a course in English literature for the Humanities requirement, you could take another literature course as your 4th course, but a course in Philosophy would not qualify since it wouldn't match the same discipline as your prior course for the humanities requirement.

2. SOCIAL SCIENCES - 9 credits
You must take at least three credits in each of two disciplines including Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Cultural Geography, Women's Studies, and Criminal Justice. The remaining three credits must be a second course in one of the disciplines chosen. ECON 2130 (3 cr.) and ECON 2230 (3 cr.) are available at a distance from UW-Platteville and fulfill six credits in the Social Sciences requirement -- both of these courses are required for the degree.

3. NATURAL SCIENCE - 9 credits
You must take courses from at least two different disciplines (including Astronomy, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, and Geology) and each course must involve a laboratory experience.

4. INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION - 3 credits
UW-Platteville offers BSAD 1300, Global Business at a distance to satisfy the requirement.

5. ETHNIC & GENDER STUDIES - 3 to 6 credits
You must take at least 3 credits in Ethnic Studies and 3 credits in Gender Studies, or take one 3-credit course that satisfies both the ethnic and gender studies requirement.

UW-Platteville offers BSAD 3340, Management, Gender, and Race, at a distance to satisfy the requirement.
