Unit Descriptions
Unit 1: Introduction to Strategic Concepts
The concept of strategy is very ambiguous and therefore often maligned and misunderstood. This course will introduce you to some basic concepts of strategy. The first unit will provide you with an introduction to strategy and its major components. It will also introduce you to strategic analysis and ethics. The major thing to remember throughout this course is that strategy is the integration of decision-making with regard to both the internal and external environments of an organization.
Unit 2: Corporate and Business Strategy and Strategic Control
Unit 1 exposed you to the overall strategy components and tools. Unit 2 will give a more in-depth look at strategy models, exposing you to the different theories and options that management should consider when deciding how to make strategies work. The strengths and weaknesses of using each of the approaches are discussed, allowing managers to weigh the pros and cons of each option.
Several tools and concepts are also discussed, which will help managers make strategic decisions. The tools also have lists of pros and cons attached for better selection of the right tool to use by managers.
Unit 3: Present Areas of Greatest Need for Strategy
This unit introduces some major thrusts involved in strategy. Some of these strategic thrusts are global expansion, e-commerce, innovation, and leadership. An organization must constantly be aware of changes in the external environment and make the necessary changes to the internal environment. For example, a change in the use of the Internet can cause a retail organization to rethink its strategic approach to selling.
