First-Line Supervisory Training for Criminal Justice Professionals

Wisconsin Department of Justice LogoThe Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), Training and Standards Bureau, and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (UWP) have forged a partnership to offer online educational opportunities to criminal justice professionals for career development. Through the start-up funding provided by the DOJ for the development of this first-line supervisory training course, CJ professionals will be able to conveniently learn and communicate with each other throughout the state of Wisconsin. Due to the generosity of the DOJ, we will also be able to offer this training opportunity to CJ professionals throughout the nation.

These classes can count towards criminal justice electives for the undergraduate criminal justice degree at UW-Platteville.

"Though leery at first of taking my first online course, because I am more of a traditional classroom learner, I found the course enjoyable and informative. I had registered for the course due to the fact I had never received any training as a 1st line supervisor. The majority of my supervisory skills were developed as I progressed through my career. This course was a real inspiration in that it affirmed the current practices I am utilizing being beneficial to the organization and community I serve. The course also assisted in building upon these practices in order to improve the services our department and I are providing. I addition I would recommend this course to any employee of law enforcement. Course Description
DOJ 3001 First-Line Supervisory Training for Criminal Justice Professionals (non-credit)
This non-credit certificate focuses on the role and function of the first-line supervisor in criminal justice agencies. Participants will examine the importance of leadership styles; supervisory skills; functions and practices; communication skills; and motivation and team building in the development of line personnel.

Once completed, the student will earn the First-Line Supervisory Training for CJ Professionals Certificate (totaling 80 hrs), which is offered in partnership with University of Wisconsin-Platteville and the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The management training advisory committee to the Bureau approved the organization of the course.

The course is delivered through a series of interactive online sessions and web-based assignments.

  • Basic Planning, Time Management and Change Management
  • Supervisory and Team Leadership
  • Supervisor Functions in Organizational Administration
  • Dynamic Communication Skills and Stress Management
  • Personnel Leadership
  • Ethics in Law Enforcement Management
  • Crisis Management and Critical Incident Management
To earn the certificate of completion, the student must complete the following requirements for the course:
  1. Read assigned readings and lectures posted
  2. Post answers to focus questions (entails application of readings and lectures to professional work situations)
  3. Post responses to group discussions (interactive online activities)
  4. Complete self-assessment assignments (e.g., self-tests)
  5. Complete one written capstone project at the completion of the course.
It is estimated that students will be spending 20 hours per month working on this course.

Instructors:
Instructors have advanced degrees and training in the area of criminal justice, and have extensive experience in law enforcement management and supervision.

Tuition and Payment Methods
Payment Options
This course is supported by the Wisconsin Department of Justice through its Training and Standards Bureau's Career Development Program for Law Enforcement and Jail Officers. Tuition is completely funded by the DOJ to its online training partner, the University of Wisconsin at Platteville, to enable officers to improve their career performance and satisfaction.

Law enforcement personnel not funded by the Wisconsin DOJ, out-of-state law enforcement personnel, and individuals interested in this class may pay tuition by check (made payable to UWP), purchase order, or credit card.

Tuition/fees:  $425.00 per class

Refund Information
Refunds for students dropping the class will be at 100 percent (minus a $50 processing fee) through the first week of class. A 50 percent refund is available during weeks two and three of class. No refund after third week of class. If the student is being funded for the course via the Wisconsin Dept. of Justice, the DOJ will be contacted prior to the student being dropped from the course. Course Availability and Registration Information
Registration: The First Line Supervisory Training for CJ Projessionals Certificate will be offered in two separate sections. Each section wil run for three and a half months. Upon completion of the section you are enrolled in, you will receive a certificate from UW-Platteville and the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

Section 1: September 2 - December 19, 2008
June 2, 2008: Registration Opens for Section 1
August 15, 2008: Registration Closes and Payment Deadline
