Course Description:    This course is designed to fully prepare a student with a course in deep foundations to: analyze the bearing capacity of deep foundations; to design deep foundations to meet bearing capacity and settlement requirements; to design reinforced concrete deep foundations (drilled shafts); and to apply Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) principles to the design and analysis of deep foundations.

 Upon completion of this course, you should be able to

Unit Descriptions

Unit 1: Introduction, Orientation, and Overview
Upon completion of this unit, you will have a comprehensive overview of what to expect during the semester.

Unit 2: Introduction to Pile Foundations Overview
Project 1, a research report on piles, will also be introduced. The project will allow you to learn beyond the reading assignments. You will learn more about the introductory aspects of piles if you read, research, and concisely summarize the information about piles in your own words in the research paper.
Outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Describe the basic types, properties, and characteristics of piles.
  • Use the correct terminology when discussing, designing, and working with piles.

Unit 3: Pile Capacities
Outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Estimate the point bearing capacity, friction capacity, ultimate capacity, allowable capacity, and gross allowable load for a pile in sands or in clay using various design methods.
  • Estimate the length of pile required for a given site.
  • Estimate the settlement of a pile under an applied load.
  • Estimate the pullout capacity and skin friction capacity for a pile.

Unit 4: Pile Load Tests
Outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Use Pile Load Tests and Pile Driving Formulas to determine insitu pile capacities.
  • Discuss the concepts of dynamic analysis by the wave equation.
  • Use GRLWEAP to test the driveability of a selected pile.
  • Discuss the use of pile set to increase the capacity of a pile.

Unit 5: Laterally Loaded Piles
Outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Differentiate between an axially loaded pile and a laterally loaded pile.
  • Explain, in your own words, the soil property modulus of subgrade reaction and the impact of this soil property on the design and behavior of a laterally loaded pile.
  • Explain, in your own words, the structural mechanics aspects of the design of a laterally loaded pile.
  • Estimate the ultimate resistance of a laterally loaded pile.

Unit 6: Pile Groups
Outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Estimate the efficiency of a Pile Group.
  • Estimate the ultimate capacity of a Pile Group in sand and in clay.
  • Estimate the elastic and consolidation settlement of a Pile Group in sand and in clay.

Unit 7: Drilled Shafts
Outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to

  • Identify the terminology used when discussing and designing drilled shafts.
  • Evaluate the methods used to construct drilled shafts.
  • Estimate the load capacity of drilled shafts to be constructed in various soil and rock conditions.

Unit 8:  LRFD Applications for Deep Foundations
Outcome
Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to analyze and design deep foundations using LRFD principles.
