She graduated from the university with a degree in Business Administration in 1999 and returned a few years later for a position with the Services for Students with Disabilities office. Soon UW-Platteville distance education alumni will be receiving a special phone call from students asking them to take Ruth Miller up on her challenge to support distance education scholarships. Miller completed her Business Administration degree in 1982 and created the Ruth Miller Distance Education Challenge Scholarship this year to assist Business Administration distance students in completing their education. Dan Avenarius has seen the UW-Platteville Distance Learning Center from just about every angle possible. He received his master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the DLC in 2006 and a few years later started teaching and developing online courses as an adjunct instructor. Dawn Drake is a person who believes in living life to the fullest. At Halloween, she encourages her entire staff to dress in costumes – knowing her own will be one of the most elaborate. Come December, she has enough Christmas sweaters to celebrate the whole month long. She finds great joy in collecting unicorns, jewelry, and other items that Drake says, “helps me remember on a daily basis to dream big, look for the magic in my everyday life, and enjoy the beauty and mystique of things we can’t explain.” Read more...

Dion Shaw

Student blends service and learning

Dion Shaw has encountered a number of obstacles during his coursework at UW-Platteville, but these challenges have not stopped him from aspiring to help others. When Shaw enrolled in the master’s degree program in 2008, he had already held a number of positions, including a technology Team Leader at SBC-Ameritech and an MIS Manager at Wisconsin Tool and Stamping. At that point in time, he had also been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis for over 10 years and was living an active life. Read more...

Degree helps achieve goals, inspires new ones

As a little boy growing up in India, Nirav Hazariwala was fascinated by learning how things worked and dreamt of becoming a mechanical engineer. He first pursued this dream by completing a bachelor’s program at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
