Facing Change - Your advisor is here to help
Did you get promoted? Are you leaving your current job? Moving to a new city? Or, did you just decide it was time to change cell phone numbers? These are all important items to discuss with your advisor. As your life changes, so do your academic needs and with updated information your advisor can help you navigate the changes as they come.
One of the fundamental pieces of building a relationship with your advisor is making sure we can contact you. Changes to your contact information should be reported to the university to ensure we can contact you if there is an emergency, a need that has to be communicated, or a positive message to share. You may make these updates in PASS or share them with your advisor to make sure they are updated in our system.
Sharing changes in your contact information not only lets us stay in touch with you, it also leads to other conversations about change in your life. For example, if you call because your phone number has changed when you relocated for a new job, your advisor may be able to recommend a course that specializes in the new tools and skills you need to excel in that position. Or perhaps your long-term goals for obtaining the degree have changed and one of our certificate programs would be a great fit to help your reach that goal. By discussing these shifting goals and needs with your advisor, we can make sure that you are getting the most out of your time with the program.
Sharing positive news that is occurring in your life is another important part of building a relationship with your advisor. We love to celebrate our students’ and alumni’s achievements! Did you complete a professional certification? Are you presenting at an industry conference? Did you help with a community service project? We’re here to cheer you on and celebrate these milestones too — you never know how these events may help redefine your educational path.
These are just a few examples of how keeping us up-to-date and having open conversations with your advisor is an important part of your experience with UW-Platteville. Keep us in mind as you continue to navigate the changes in your personal and professional lives, and we will be here for you each step of the way.
