A student enrolling in the Practicum I course must have clinical approval from the program faculty. The student must accrue 75 hours of observational experience in a school setting. The setting must have a licensed practicing counselor. Approval for the site will be based on the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction guidelines and limited to available Counseling Psychology Program resources.
Prior to the start of your Practicum I experience a meeting with the Practicum I supervisor with be held. During this meeting you will learn of the specific requirements of the course. You will have the opportunity to sign-up for observations/experiences weekly. Your instructor/supervisor is your main contact for approval of observations and experiences.
A student enrolling in the Practicum I course must have clinical approval from the program faculty. The student must accrue 150 hours of observational experience in at least 3 clinical settings. Lifetime experience can count for up to 50 hours of this observational experience. The setting observed must have a licensed practicing counselor and approval must be obtained from the appropriate faculty prior to visitation. A variety of activities may be observed including clinical case conferences, referral meetings, evaluations, intake interviews, individual, couple or group counseling sessions, etc.
There is also a 75-hour opportunity for a Practicum I student at the UW Platteville Counseling Center. If you are interested in this experience you must indicate this to your Practicum I instructor prior to the semester. Two interviews are necessary to obtain this position; one with the Counseling in the Community Practicum coordinator and another with the Counseling Center Department Chair.
Practicum I students will serve under the supervision of a university supervisor. A university supervisor is a qualified faculty member of the Counseling Psychology Program. Students enrolled in the Prac I course are required to schedule 3 individual supervision meetings with their university supervisor during the semester. These meetings should be scheduled following each 50 hours of clinical observation.
A student enrolling in the Practicum I course must have clinical approval from the department faculty. The student must accrue 150 hours of observational experience in a minimum of three student service settings. Students will be expected to attend a number of on campus meetings.
This practicum is designed for students to gain exposure to a variety of professional student services settings. A variety of activities may be included: one-on-one work, group work, classroom presentations, administrative duties etc.
Students are expected to act and behave in an ethical and professional manner. Should the student have or observe and ethical dilemma, the university supervisor must be fully informed in a timely manner. Students are also expected to document any relevant circumstances surrounding the ethical dilemma.
A semester prior to your Practicum II experience in schools, you may apply for your Practicum II placement. You may obtain a Practicum II application from the Counseling Psychology office. You may submit your top two or three choices for placement. Requests for Practicum II must be submitted at least six weeks prior to the planned semester. You will be notified by the professor supervising Practicum II of your placement. Your supervisor will then hold a meeting where you will complete a Practicum II approval card that must be signed by two Counseling Psychology faculty members.

Admission to the Practicum II course requires clinical candidacy and completion of all coursework including the core courses, research and writing courses, Counseling in the Schools and Practicum I in School Counseling. Students must also be in full academic standing as a graduate student.
Practicum II is an applied experience during which the practicum student works as a professional counselor in training in cooperation with a school district’s counseling personnel. The practicum is the culmination of the counseling psychology student’s preparation. The emphasis of Practicum II is on counseling skills, an experience to work with actual students, and the development of insight. The practicum experience requires 525 hours of counseling tasks under the supervision of an experienced school counselor and a university supervisor.
Practicum II students must apply for Practicum II. Applications for Practicum II in School Counseling are typically distributed in the Counseling in the Schools course during fall semester. Applications can be submitted to the practicum placement coordinator who will administer the placement.
Practicum II students will serve under the supervision of an on-site supervisor and a university supervisor. An on-site supervisor is a certified, practicing school counselor who is employed by a school (for at least 2 years) in which the practicum will take place. A university supervisor is a qualified faculty member of the Counseling Psychology Program.
