Authors, Screen Writers, Playwrights, and Journalists whose subject matter involves the processing of crime scenes or law enforcement response to crime scenes.  This course is more appropriate for both fiction and non-fiction authors.

Descriptions

This class is intended to give authors an overview of the reality of responding to a crime scene and processing it for physical evidence.  The success of an investigation involves the ability to define the crime scene, along with the initial observations and actions of the first responding officer, the evidence technician, and the investigator. This basic course will address the issues faced by the first responding officer and skills needed by evidence technicians.

Training will be completed through the incorporation of lectures, demonstrations, and practical activates. The training will culminate in a mock crime scene scenario which attendees will have the responsibility of properly processing, utilizing the methodologies acquired during the formal instruction periods.

The intended outcome of this training is that the attendee will have the knowledge to write accurate descriptions of true-life crime scenes.  They will gain first hand experience in the sights, sounds, feelings, and even some of the smells officers typically encounter through their daily exposure to the world of criminal justice.  The training and practical experiences are designed to give the attendee the knowledge and experience typically associated with property crimes (theft, burglaries, stolen vehicles) and violent crimes (robbery, battery, sexual assault, and death investigations).

This class will utilize UW-Platteville's brand new Forensic Investigation Crime Scene House. This nearly 3,000 square-foot building is the first purpose build laboratory for creating mock crime scenes for the purpose of teaching CSI skills.  The first floor is arranged as a 1,500 square-foot residential area, while the basement is designed to look and feel like a commercial structure with an external entrance to provide a range of situational experiences and learning opportunities.

The house has a special observation area and is equipped with one-way mirrors, and closed-circuit video and audio equipment to provide instructors and students several ways to critique work.
