Well 'Be Bold, Break the Mold' offers insights to different methods and techniques other teachers use to foster verbal and non-verbal communication. It uses media to encourage inquiry and collaboration in the classroom. We will also look at students and how they create barriers that impede learning. Find out how other teachers handle this situation, and identify and create techniques you can use in the classroom to encourage positive social interaction and self-motivation. During this course, the participants will view three different movies: Music From the Heart, Mona Lisa Smile and Stand and Deliver.

Description: Mon & Tues, Aug 25 & 26, 2008; Times to be determined. This session begins with demonstrating that the brains of girls and boys develop along profoundly different trajectories and that the differences between 6-year-old girls and 6-year-old boys are unexpectedly large. We will consider how a better understanding of these gender differences can broaden educational horizons for both girls and boys. Teachers who understand these differences will have more boys who are excited about creative writing and poetry and more girls who want to study subjects such as computer science and physics. We close with a consideration of best practice for the classroom, specifically for teaching creative writing to boys and mathematics to girls.

The implementation plan will provide an opportunity for participants to implement ideas obtained from the workshop in their classrooms, determine their usefulness, and evaluate their effectiveness with their students. As a follow-up to the workshop, participants will meet to discuss the content they implemented, procedures they used, and their evaluation of its effectiveness.

Description: Wed & Thur, Aug 20 & 21, 2008; 9:00 am - 4:30 pm. Children are often the 'forgotten mourners.' Many adults do not know how to intervene appropriately. Educators encounter grieving children frequently in the classroom due to the loss of a beloved pet, a terminally ill family member, or the death of a loved one. Those who work with these children need to have the sensitivity to acknowledge this grief and the knowledge to help them productively cope with such losses. This class is designed to provide educators with an understanding of how children grieve and techniques they can use to empower children and adolescents with effective coping skills. Participants will be involved in age appropriate activities that can be used in the classroom to assist young people through all kinds of losses.

Description: Wed & Thurs, Aug 13 & 14, 2008: 9:00 am - 4:30 pm. While visualization and focusing techniques are used widely in sports, health care and business, many teachers are not given these teaching tools and techniques. There is substantial research demonstrating that creative visualization, journal writing and meditation serve as powerful and easy tools to raise a learner's ability to focus and retain information. Teachers are presented with an eclectic array of techniques from cognitive psychology as well as narrative and cognitive therapies applied to classroom learning. This diverse collection of practices offers students and teachers increased insight, creativity, relaxation and the ability to stay focused and 'on task.' Creative writing exercises, along with other tools to enhance the brain's ability to focus and create, are also offered. All the techniques and exercises will be practiced within the course. The target audience includes teachers K through 12th grade.
