Description: Jan 23, Feb 20, Mar 20, 2010; 8:00 am - 5:30 pm. INSTRUCTOR: Kehl, LOCATION: Madison. The purpose of the course is to provide early childhood care and education staff with knowledge and expertise in the teaching and learning of early literacy and early mathematics. This will include the key elements of early literacy (oral language development, vocabulary and concept development, letter name awareness, print awareness, and phonological awareness) and the instructional components of early literacy (shared reading, read-to's, independent reading, modeled writing, interactive writing, scaffolded writing, and independent writing). It will also include the five content standards for mathematics for the young child (number sense, time and space, geometry-shapes, early algebra- patterning, and data analysis-classifying and sorting) and the instructional strategies to support learning by problem solving, reasoning, communicating, representing, and connecting. Instruction will also include how to embed early literacy and early mathematics activities into all domains of the early childhood classroom experience. Finally, teachers will gain insights into how to partner with families to support early literacy and early math development.
