Chemistry and NextGen Tech is a week-long, chemistry immersion program that exposes students to the basic ideas and fundamental insights that have allowed chemistry to play a central role in creating our modern world. Participating students will develop the core skills needed to be successful in a college-level chemistry class, while engaging in multiple hands-on lab activities that reinforce and deepen their understanding of key concepts.

An important feature of the program will be periodic spotlight sessions, each of which will focus on a different technological advance driven by chemistry. Participants will be instructed by UW-Platteville chemistry faculty, in both lecture and laboratory settings, and they will also carry out one-on-one activities with current UW-Platteville chemistry majors. These college students will function as near-peer mentors throughout the week, providing participants ample opportunity to ask as many questions as they like—on their own terms and in a relaxed atmosphere—in order to learn more about life as a college student at UW-Platteville.

Specific topics that will be covered include atomic structure, stoichiometric reasoning, acid/base chemistry, redox reactions, periodic properties, states of matter, and theories of chemical bonding. Participants who successfully complete the week long program will be awarded college credit for Introduction to Chemistry: CHEM-1020.
