An applied behavior analyst employs an in-depth knowledge of the field and methods of the study of the science of behavior to identify and treat a person with behavior issues. Behavior analysis services help people learn new behaviors, increase or reduce existing behaviors, and teach individuals when to use specific behaviors in specific contexts. The scope of these services range from addressing challenging behaviors of an individual person to changing the behavior of an entire organization or community
This program is specifically designed for individuals with a master’s degree in education or human services who are interested in becoming board certified behavior analysts. However, anyone with an interest in learning about interventions to produce lasting change in behavior will find this program to be extremely useful. Note: this program does not lead to teacher certification, but may help you to renew your existing teacher certification.

Two hours of lecture discussion will be supplemented with one hour of on-site instruction. This field training will not count toward BACB field experience hours. A schedule of observations and Task list skills to be demonstrated will be set by the BCBA supervisor and student. The observation record will be kept on BACB Supervised Field Placement forms. All content areas of the BACB Task list will be addressed during Supervised Field Work.

ABA researchers developed many of the most effective methods for working with autistic and developmentally disabled individuals. This wide array of techniques accounts for why an entire course is dedicated to them. The original literature will be complemented with readings, videos, and field observations. Projects will have students design such programs, select appropriate procedures based on FBAs, and describe overlapping and complementary elements of various procedures. Families with autistic children will serve as discussants and students will design sensitive assessments and practical programs that accommodate family parameters (number of other children, number of adults in household, finances, etc.)

This course extends the conceptual and research studies of Autism and Developmental Disabilities I by using techniques in the field under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. The hours thus accumulated will be added to the total field work requirement. Behavior Analysis Certification Board field work forms will be used to record this supervised work (see BCBA Field Work course proposal) and the Task list areas addressed. All field work sites and supervisory accommodations will be at the discretion of the instructor and subject to approval by the BCBA Program Coordinator.
