About Arts Build

ARTS BUILD is an economic development project directed at southwest Wisconsin artists, artisans, and craftspeople interested in beginning or expanding their arts-related businesses. Our aim is to increase the professional and business capacity of arts entrepreneurs though training, mentoring, counseling, and networking. The Arts Build program is funded in part by a Continuing EDvantage Grant from the Division of Outreach and E-Learning Extension, University of Wisconsin-Extension received by University of Wisconsin-Platteville's Office of Continuing Education.

Initial Arts Build activities focused on listening. Eight grass roots informational meetings were held in southwest Wisconsin communities, with over 200 local artists, artisans and craftspeople attending. After discussion and gathering survey responses, Arts Build provided participants with workshops, training, and mentoring opportunities. An electronic Arts Build Participant Directory was started to foster networking among creative people in the region.

The publication of this full-color directory - the first of its kind in southwest Wisconsin - is the direct result of a generous gift to the creative community by the Trelay Company, as part of their 100th anniversary celebration. Featuring 175 artists, artisans and craftspeople, representing a variety of disciplines, as well as years and levels of experience, the Directory will serve as a key resourse for connicting artists with one another, their communities, counties and region, as well as with available art, business, and economic development resources.

As we focus statewide on Growing Wisconsin Creatively, southwest Wisconsin is recognizing the importance of nurturing its own creative assests - providing recognition and support to the arts entrepreneurs who are part of our region's creative identity. Artistic and creative expression and participation are essential to the well-being of everyone in Wisconsin. Public investment in the arts, culture, creativity and innovation strengthens the state's competitive edge in economic development, downtown revitalization, educational advancement, tourism opportunities, and community engagement.

Thanks to all who support the Arts in southwest Wisconsin!
