This fall the Confucius Institute at UW-Platteville offers several unique opportunities to learn about Chinese language, culture and business at the only Confucius Institute in Wisconsin.

Five-week course designed for learners with no Chinese language background. Students will learn about the 4 tones and pinyin pronunciation system, as well as basic conversational vocabulary. Fee includes textbook.
Fee: $45Five-week course continues with more vocabulary. For anyone who has completed Beginning Mandarin I or other Chinese language study. Uses textbook from Mandarin I.
Fee: $20Four-week course aimed at developing basic proficiency in Mandarin. Vocabulary includes greetings, numbers, shopping, and banking. Fee includes textbook.
Fee: $30One afternoon each month the Confucius Institute invites school children to explore Chinese language and culture. Location and grade level varies.
Fee: FREEFive week program to help young children start learning about Chinese culture and language. Classes are a mixture of crafts, songs and activities.

Gain insight into Chinese daily life and the influence of Confucius on manners and society
Fee: FREECustoms and lifestyles vary greatly among provinces. Integral to these differences are climate, physical features and population patterns. We will focus upon the identification of the different “rhythms of life” in the different provinces and cities.
Fee: $5While 90% of China’s population belongs to the Han majority, 55 other ethnic groups call this country home. We will discuss China’s national policy regarding ethnic groups, the five ethnic autonomous regions, and share some of the customs of their rich heritage.

Enjoy traditional Moon cakes and learn about the customs surrounding China's second most important holiday. Special Note: This will be a one time event held on Sunday, October 4th, 1:00-3:00pm at the UWP Pioneer Farm. Be aware that the time and location differ from all other family workshops.
The Art of Tea – Oct 10 or Nov 14
China is the home of tea. Before the Tang Dynasty, Chinese tea was exported by land and sea to Japan and Korea, later reaching India and the Arabian peninsula.
Calligraphy – Oct 17 or Nov 21
As Chinese characters evolved from pictures and signs, the Chinese art of calligraphy developed naturally from its unique writing system
Chinese Painting – Oct 24 or Dec 5
Chinese paintings integrate poetry and calligraphy with themes that include figures, landscapes and nature.
Paper Cuts – Oct 31 or Dec 12
Originating in China, paper cuts are made by cutting paper to form intricate patterns and pasting them on walls, windows, doors and ceilings.
