Course Formats

Students near the UW-Fox Valley and UW-Rock County campuses may attend courses in a traditional classroom setting. Students anywhere in the state of Wisconsin may take streaming video courses via high-speed Internet. In both scenarios, the professional engineering courses are taught by UW-Platteville faculty.

The streaming video lectures are recorded during a traditional classroom setting and are made available to students online via Desire2Learn - the official online learning management system for UW-Platteville. Because the course is recorded, you are not required to be at a specific place at a specific time. However, you do need to view the lectures on a regular basis consistent with the course syllabus in order to keep up with homework assignments, any lab requirements, and scheduled examinations. You will interact with your professor during his/her office hours by using a variety of current communication technologies.

Textbooks

Textbooks are issued to students for their professional engineering course(s) through the UW-Platteville Textbook Rental System for use during the semester. The fees to cover the loan and delivery of textbooks are included in your student fees that are paid at the beginning of each semester. The UW System Library Loan Truck will deliver your textbooks to the UW College campus you designate as your "home" institution ? not your home address. Upon picking up the textbooks from the Student Services Department, you will need to complete and return the corresponding paperwork to the UW-Platteville Textbook Center.

It is important for students to be registered in classes as early as possible to ensure the arrival of the textbook(s) prior to the start of classes. It is recommended that you register for UW-Platteville courses during the UW-Platteville on-campus registration. To view the current schedule, please see the Academic Calendar.

At the end of the semester, you will return the textbooks to your "home" campus and request the books to be delivered to the UW-Platteville Textbook Center. For more information about the UW-Platteville Textbook Center policies and procedures, please visit the Textbook Center website.

If a student drops a class, the textbook(s) need to be returned to UW-Platteville immediately after dropping the course. Students may take their textbook(s) to their local UW Colleges Student Serv-ices Department to request the textbook(s) be returned to UW-Platteville using the UW-System Interlibrary Loan truck.

Peer-Assisted Learning (PAL)

PAL is a free academic assistance program available to all students who are enrolled in certain, pre-defined, difficult courses. PALs are students who have previously done well in the course, who attend all class lectures, and who tutor students in study sessions they facilitate. Though participation in a PAL program is voluntary, it is highly encouraged because of its proven success.
