Technical Notes (12/20/96)

UW GenChem Pages use HTML 3.2 features including Tables, client-side image maps and Frames, which are viewable with most recent graphical Web browsers.  Netscape versions 2.02 and higher display these pages properly - the current Microsoft Internet Explorer release (and other browsers supporting HTML 3.2) should also work.  As Javascript programs are planned for later use, we recommend Netscape Navigator 3.0 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0.  Do NOT use Netscape Navigator 1.x... a bug causes crashes when viewing larger Tables.

The digital videos in GenChem Pages are QuickTime movies with Indeo R3.2 compression.  To play these videos, both Apple QuickTime (2.1 or later) and the Intel Indeo codec (R3.2 -or- the new IVI version) should be installed on your machine.  If you're using Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, a QuickTime browser plug-in may be installed, but you could need a newer version of QuickTime. Note that the video player (PLAYER.EXE) included with the QuickTime installation below can be used as a "Helper application" to view videos.

Netscape plug-in problems?

First, confirm that you have QuickTime version 2.1 or later installed on your system, as well as the Indeo R3.2 (or IVI) codec. Without both of these components, the QuickTime plug-in will not play GenChem Pages digital videos. If problems persist, there is another way to examine the videos.

To disable Netscape's QuickTime plug-in and use an external viewer ('Helper' application):

  1. Move NPQTW32.DLL from Netscape's PROGRAM\PLUGINS directory to another location... don't delete it, for now.
  2. Under Options/General Preferences/Helpers, change File type setting for 'video/quicktime' to Launch the video playback Application of your choice (for example, the QuickTime 'PLAYER.EXE', usu. located in your WINDOWS directory if you've installed QuickTime as above)
This seems to resolve conflicts, and will allow you to play back videos in a separate, movable window while leaving the GenChem Pages screen you're viewing undisturbed.
